Ep.5 Unleashing Creativity: Mastering Handheld Shooting in Acadia

Published 2023-09-28
Unlock your inner artist while shooting without a tripod and express yourself through fluid motion and a "Run-and-Gun" approach while walking away with more diverse imagery.

In this video, I'll take you along to Otter Cliff for sunrise, a photo hunt to capture the amazing pileated woodpecker, Eagle Lake (post sunrise), A hike at Great Head, and I make one last attempt at Jordan Pond to meet my goal of creating an image to hang on my wall. Was I successful?

This marks the final episode in my Acadia series - through the lens. As mentioned above, I left my tripod back at camp and shot all day handheld while traversing landscapes by bike.

Too much fun, tag along for the ride!

  • Have you tried a handheld "run-&-gun" photo shoot before? What was it like, did you get some keepers? Did you feel freedom or perhaps a little anxiety? Comment below with your experience or if you plan to give this a try. ✍
  • I can’t say enough about your last in this series of beautiful Acadia. I loved it all. Great job my son! In my own made up word-FANTABULOS💕

Bravo to a great series Mark! Wish it wasn’t over. I’ll just have to start from Ep.1 and re-watch them all! Looking forward to the PNW series.

Excellent video and series. Of all my trips to Acadia your recent trip is one of my favorites. You showed her beauty with thoughtfulness and insight that few can achieve....and came home with a photo for your living room wall. Your "run and gun" showed the same care as tripod photography, no "spray and pray" for you. The balance between hiking beautiful places, absorbing the nature around me and photographing the moment is something I struggle with constantly, you make is seem so effortless. I look forward to your upcoming series on the PNW and I know I'll relive many fantastic moments along the incredible Oregon coast.
  • I believe I sense that there will be some Milk along the Great Head trail!! Fabulous series, Mark! Of all the incredibly great videos you post, your trip documentary series are always my favorites. I am excited to see your next series on the PNW. I'll bet it was a great trip, especially with The Camper as co-star!

Acadia is Magic! Great Series...I hope to be half the photographer you are some day! Wonderful channel ! Well Done!

I watched this video moments ago as I sit and rest after this mornings disapointing photo session in Acadia (Schoodic Peninsula)…a bit frustrated as I am battling the lead gray skies of Canadian wildfire smoke once again. No soft sprays of golden light for me on this trip…Oh well…trying to think in B&W for my photos. Once again Mark a superbly crafted presentation that is very inspiring. Well done!

Hi Mark. Awesome series. Keep up the good work. Greetings from South Africa.
  • A great video to cap off your latest series. I just love the large wall art you created. Remember the talk we had and that piece or one similar would be your top end. Love it 😍
  • @MacOrson-pt9ws
I have to say, this was a beautiful series Mark, very well done. I have not done this type of run-and-gun photography before, very precise and calculated as if you were using a tripod. I will have to try this.

Wow!! That was a great way to end this series. You took some fabulous photos, this makes me want to visit more than ever. I loved the woodpecker shots, they are still on my bucket list. There is nothing like lying down under a beautiful tree and looking up through it’s canopy at the blue sky, I know what I’m talking about and I think you do too. Another jewel in your crown Mark, great job. Looking forward to your next adventure, what was it? Oh that’s right PNW how could I ever forget. 👍👍👍
  • Would love to go here and do take some good photographs. Thanks for sharing.

Really enjoyed the series Mark and looking forward to your Oregon series. I'm curious, the meta data in most of your photos lists "handheld and focus stacked". What's your method of focus stacking handheld? I'd imagine there's going to be lots of movement between focusing for each stack? Seems that might not work out the best.
