Wild Orangutan Heals Himself with Medicinal Plant in World First | Vantage with Palki Sharma

An orangutan in Indonesia has healed his own wound. The wild orangutan is named Rakus. He self-medicated using a medicinal plant. This is the first time a wild animal recorded treating an injury with a medicinal plant. Rakus used leaves of yellow root plants, which possess anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Rakus created paste of leaves and applied it to wound repeatedly. Within five days, the orangutan's wound had closed. Within a month, the orangutan's wound healed without any signs of infection. Animals often self-medicate to treat ailments. How do they acquire the skills? How did the orangutan learn how to use leaves to heal his injury? Palki Sharma tells you.

at this point i am convinced they don't talk only because they don't wanna pay taxes.
  • most animals self medicate, they know what plants to eat when they are sick, just watch your dog or chickens...they know what to eat when they are sick...
  • @amazingcalvin
Even stray dogs have been observed by ppl of olden times to heal itself of stomach problems by eating a combination of specific plant leaves, which is not part of it's usual diet. Whether it is DNA hardwired behavior or just learned behavior which can be useful for future reference, we cannot deny that animals know more than we think they do.

this is new to the west not to Africa,in Africa we know this about animals.
  • @info145
Primitive humans learned almost everything by observing animals! Not just medicine, but even things to eat... and more. For example: Where did Asians get Kung Fu and other martial arts? Ask them and they'll even admit it... the Tiger, the Snake, the Mantis, the Crane, and the Monkey!
  • Groundbreaking. I guess all those animals using nature’s pharmacy for millennia were just rehearsing for this moment."

  • It's known that if a rat gets bitten by a snake it runs and searches for a plant and eats it and then lives, other animals also know what plants can make them live!
  • @solver55
do you understand how concious the animal is? how much aware animals can be and keeping them in zoo is how cruel.

Some day in the distant future, Orangutans will be talking about how there used to be a race of super Orangutans that once lived here and controlled the Earth before them and eventually left. Most Orangutans won't believe it...
