Lego Technic 7 Segment display with programming wheel

Published 2021-09-17
I added a rotating programming wheel to the 7 segment display. It uses the "Technic, Link Tread Wide with Two Pin Holes" (57518) which (completely by coincidence, not by planning) fit 10-around on the "Technic Tread Sprocket Wheel Large" (57519). I only have one of those so I used it in the very middle of the programming wheel. I cobbled together the support bits on the ends to keep it from wobbling too much.

I'm not set on this design at all... it was more of a "let's see what I can throw together in an evening" and just an first-try on my iterative prototyping process. I like to throw together lots of prototypes to see what works and what doesn't. This design for example, I thought was going to be PERFECT, but I noticed with this prototype that: 1) I don't have technic beams long enough, 2) it's hard to keep it aligned, 3) the pin-registers need to have their own stops, 4) there needs to be more contrast with the background (not green), 5) etc... ;D

The next design will likely be better, and probably not the final design. :D

I've always wanted to make a wall clock sided display like this. 7 segments from a digital clock, but mechanical in operation.
