People like to laugh at Shatner's acting, but at moments like this I only see a great performer delivering a great moment as it should be done.

My history teacher told me "if you want to become a great speech giver, listen to Hitler or one of or presidents." and I said "nah, ill just listen to Capt. Kirk speak."
  • My grandfather would sometimes get irritated at Star Trek and make us go to bed early which was quite upsetting to three little boys who had lost their mom two years earlier. Then one night we were watching this episode when grandpa walked in. He listened to it and after that he never made us miss it again.

I wonder why so many people only see it as a USA patriotic speech and leave it at that. I'm not from the US and find it very moving. Yes, is a product of its time, being literally Kirk preaching the US constitution but the essence of the message, that freedom and liberty should be for all people holds true to this day and for the future as long as there is people anywhere. Which in turn is how I see this scene and the whole of all good old media, the meaning behind it is what matters not the literal sense.
  • "They must apply to everyone, or they mean nothing." Sometimes, we all have to be reminded of that truth, including myself.

When was young, this speech made me think...now that I am older, I weep. one of the best in Trek, hands down.

The greatest reading of the U.S. Constitution by a Canadian ever.

Captain Kirk ought to come back and visit Washington and give the White House and Congress this lesson again.

1:40 "They must apply to EVERYONE or they mean NOTHING! Do you understand ?!?!?!?!" Brilliant!

One of Kirks great moments. I give the ending of Mirror Mirror a slight edge, another great speech to bearded Spock.

It's cool because the Enterprise is Constitution class, so he knows it's importance better than anyone. Plus I like the way he looks at the flag.
  • @Taospark
Kirk really should have given the chief all the patch notes to the Constitution. "By the way, watch out for political parties, chieftain. We're still not sure if that was a bug or feature."

Look at that swagger and charm Kirk has. What an amazing actor he is. The way he walks, talks and enunciates the words breathed so much life into the Constitution and you felt a connect with him.
  • @Xurreal
He just kept talking in one long incredibly unbroken sentence, moving from topic to topic, so that no one else had a chance to interrupt-it was really quite hypnotic.

American words spoken best by a Canadian actor.

This speech still makes me weep. Its the beauty. The emotion that Shatter put into this speech. Its..just amazing.
  • i get tears in my eyes every time I see this. Especially at the end where you see Old Glory, worn and tattered, but still there. But Captain Kirk's words--even more than 50 years later, they still resound.
