I flew from Canada to France... in an HOUR?

Published 2022-12-04
Back in the summer, I flew from Canada to France in less than an hour... But how's that possible?

Well, just off the coast of Newfoundland is a tiny French overseas collectivity called Saint Pierre and Miquelon.

These islands are home to only 6,000 people, and they have their own airline called Air Saint-Pierre!

Needing to fly from St. John's to Halifax, I decided to make an overnight detour to France to fly with them, and it was a trip to remember.

With thanks to @MarkBrandonAviation for the use of his photos.

  • I’ve flown myself there a few times! I visited the Gander air traffic control centre and they had a great story. They said one time the Scottish controllers (who own the other side of the Atlantic) called them and said “hey so we have a French airplane, going from France to France, and they wanna cross the Atlantic to get there”. The Gander controllers had to explain that yes, it has a French airport identifier, but it’s actually on this side so send them over!
  • Great video Alex. I did not know this French island existed. I live in Pennsylvania in the U.S. I am putting this on my bucket list. I love Canada and my neighbors to the north. Keep traveling safe. Love your videos!!!

Hi my parents are from Saint Pierre and that is how I have dual citizenship 🇨🇦🇫🇷. I've been to Saint Pierre and Miquelon several times growing up. Most of my family and extended family are still there
  • I have been to St. Pierre many times but never by plane. When I was younger, my grandmother lived in Fortune and the owner of the ferry was her neighbour so he took me over several times. I have returned 3 times as an adult as well, beautiful spot. Glad you got to visit Alex.
  • I grew up in Newfoundland and always assume St. Pierre would be very similar just a different language. The first time I went there was while I was doing my flight training. I was blown away. It may be a stones throw from Canada but it is 100% European.
  • I'm glad you spent time showing us Saint-Pierre and Miquelon not just the flight. It must be mind boggling to visit this small piece of France just a few kilometers from the coast of Canada where most everything looks European from the French cars, street signs, electrical reciprocals and currency and much more. I wonder how many Canadians are aware of this place?

In the history column, the last "invasion" of St. Pierre and Miquelon was in December 1941. Charles de Gaulle sent 3 warships and a submarine. They landed 230 sailors and the Vichy governor did not put up a fight.
  • That was amazing thanks!! Being from Halifax I've always been fascinated by Saint Pierre and Miquelon. Besides the cars and the electrical outlets, I also noticed all the roadsigns are of European standards. You've convinced me to visit, thank you!
  • 9:44 So finally someone brings a Peugeot 3008 on the island ! I was thinking it was the last place in France without this model

I hopped over on foot while I was visiting Newfoundland. The car ferry is relatively new: Canada drug its feet on building a suitable dock at Fortune and it was only opened last year. Previously there was a ferry only for foot traffic. If you return, be sure to visit the Ark Museum. They have a guillotine there, used once in 1889, the only time a guillotine was used in North America.
  • St Pierre and Miquelon is definitely a pretty unique place, shows that even a place so small could have a history so rich. When the islands were finally resettled in French hands in 1816, they were resettled by Basques, Bretons, and Normans. That's why you see the flags of these respective groups on the unofficial St Pierre and Miquelon flag at 9:59 And regarding the maritime boundaries for fishing, I understand how they feel. Their EEZ literally looks like a bitten Dum-Dum lollipop! Going the tourism route is the right move.

As a student I interned at the DGAC (french FAA) for a month and people would joke about how well equipped and costly this airport is (state of the art ILS, fully staffed ATC and firefighters...) for the level of trafic it has... But it's their only reliable connection to any major city and having a direct flight to Paris in the summer really means a lot !
  • I've always wanted to visit St Pierre & Miquelon ever since I saw that weird little (FR) on the map in primary school, and especially since seeing some uniquely European cars driving around eastern Canada sporting French plates. I'm not sure whether I'd take the ferry or plane - the plane is far more convenient, but the ferry would be an experience in itself (mostly the connections on the NL side).
  • St Pierre and Miquelon fun fact: St Pierre was named such after St. Peter, the patron saint for fishermen. While Miquelon was named such by Basque sailor Martin de Hoyarçabal. Mikelon is the Basque version of Michael in Basque Country, so Miquelon is the French way of spelling Mikelon. While the Langlade part of Miquelon-Langlade comes from l'île à l'Anglais which means Englishman's Island

Many of your northern trips have looked physically demanding. This one, on the other hand, looks like fun! 😍 One of my aviation bucket list items is to fly my plane to an airport whose ICAO code starts with something other than C or K. As a westerner the nearest options are MMTJ and PAKT. If I lived in eastern Canada the options would be LFVP and MYGF.
  • @douggale5962
The constant speed propeller is working great. Very pleased to see that France is nice to Canadians.
  • @VlogdeJorge
I worked once for them in YHZ airport, I want to visit one day these islands, great you visit Saint Pierre et Miquelon.
  • @Nooticus
Faultless trip review of a place I’ve always found super interesting for many reasons! Also huge props to you for doing this trip report before any of the ‘big name’ aviation channels have done it, as well as blurring out faces. Great work 👍
  • This is amazing. Honestly your most fascinating video yet. I always knew it was part of France but had no idea it was so different. Definitely going to do this trip this Summer. Thank you!
  • Great video Alex! I really enjoy your videos. I have such a love for the island of St Pierre because my mom learned to speak French there when becoming a teacher as part of an exchange program in university from Newfoundland. She brought me to the island when I was younger and we recently visited and it was very magical. I have taught myself/learn French and according to the locals I sound like be from SPM with my well practiced French accent. Would definitely go back in a heartbeat.
