After a decade of single-party dominance, India's Parliament is witnessing a resurgence of robust opposition. The reduced numbers for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a significant surge in opposition representation promise a dynamic shift in parliamentary proceedings. And this is not just limited to the aggression we have witnessed on the floor of the house but can positively impact legislation, governance and ultimately democracy.

Recent history has seen crucial bills like the Finance Bill 2023 and the Criminal Code Bill passed without any debate, underscoring the importance of a stronger opposition in ensuring thorough deliberation.
In this week's Let Me Explain Pooja Prasanna looks at what a stronger opposition can achieve in Parliament, why it's good for democracy and how it can ultimately benefit us, the citizens of India.

An opposition with teeth and a roar is very heartening to see. Thanks to voters, esp., those in UP! No more ordinances.
  • thank goodness. i’m 26 years old and im realising what democracy means. it doesn’t mean uniformity rather acceptance.
  • Teenagers and youth who grew up during 2014-2024 period has not witnessed this. They are used to seeing only Modiji everywhere. I remember news looked different before 2014. Hopeful to see the small changes.
  • @Tank.3d
Gobiji is the "asli pappu " with no buddhi at all...
  • @user-ee9eo3ty7f
After 10 years of undeclared emergency now only feel what is democracy.
  • A visibly angry PM is unlikely to accept the current reality and will try all means to silence the opposition voices. The opposition will have a fight in their hands. Good analysis. Thanks.

Rahul ji is a gem in Indian democracy. What a great leader he turned out to be
  • @silington1
Funniest is the face of The Speaker of Parliament 😅
  • @DGTG-_
Worst person to stand as PM. A person can't react upon Manipur's incident, who don't know importance of Mangalsutra. Don't know were our political leaders are going.
  • @AM-pg1zo
First cut down the Finance Minister...she is the biggest headache for middle class families and tax payers.... states are not getting the proper gst Money from the central.... Looting the companies from other States and investing in Gujarat...Not able to give equal governance to all the states... The government is only for Ambani and Adani....
  • @donvtor24
Why Om Birla's face look like he is delivering a baby?😂😂😂
  • Look at look on PM's face, saying loud and clear that hypocrisy got blown out of cover. Now, BJP needs to repair all bridges, airports and railways using all technologies and warranties before they expire from Adaniji and friends. Where's all the investors and Indian Einsteins of India that cannot build technology to get a train to its destination.
  • You guys are doing a fantastic job.. Pooja has done research.. congrats
  • @aguestonearth
This is an important explainer. This generation is seeing an opposition for the first time. Media needs to play its part to tell the people how the parliament functions. Thank you. 🙏🏼

The return of strong opposition gives a strong belief in democratic approach. Opposition should utilise this forum to speak on topics that harm the public like "bhole baba" and "Neet". It should not be a forum to clear out personal differences.
