For anyone who didn’t read the book: Valjean actually received a relatively short sentence for bread stealing, but he kept attempting prison breaks which increased his sentence

So essentially, it’s a story about a man who gets wrongfully arrested and ends up with a criminal record, trying to survive back in the real world only to realize, with the criminal record you’re screwed matter what!
