Her unique voice winds inside your heart like the best secret you ever kept. Valerie June hails from Tennessee, where numerous musical traditions intertwine and collide – gospel, Appalachian folk, blues, Americana. It is from this stew that her music is rooted in a style she calls, “organic moonshine roots music.” When she was a little girl, she tagged along with her father, a local promoter of gospel and R&B music, while he hung posters around Jackson for his upcoming acts. In her late teens, she made her way to Memphis where she played rock with her then-husband. Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys produced her first major label album, “Pushin’ Against a Stone,” and gave her sound a deep, lustrous feel. She’s a storyteller with her voice, which she can make sweet, gritty, soft or fierce. In her songs she goes for character and emotion. In the process, she’ll win your heart. Like a treasured secret.

Valerie June played Astral Plane on the free live music concert this afternoon coordinated by the National Air and Space Museum: Space Songs. Valerie June's words and lyrics struck a chord with me: Is there a light? You have inside you Can't touch ... Is there a way? For you to shine Without fear ... Is there a way? For you to give it Your all ... Dreaming a dream Of sweeter things great or small .. Is there a light? You have inside you Can touch
