James and animator Ninetailedbrush are reacting to my favorite Disney movie Tarzan (1999). This classic Disney animation brings together the glory of Disney animation and Phil Collins for a heart-wrenching tale of love, loss, and most importantly, family. Enjoy this first time watching reaction and new addition to the Animator Reacts series.

Can we take a moment to appreciate Jane? I love how they managed to portray her as both competent in her choosen field, but out of her depth when confronted with a completely different world, while also able to adapt eventually. Plus, she and her father have one of the more healthy child/parent relaitonship in Disney movies.

The soundtrack by Phil Collins goes hard in this movie. You’re not human if you don’t tear up just a little at You’ll Be In My Heart.

I love how Tarzan's adaptive behavior is so central to the story from when he was a child. His mimicking animal sounds, learning to move like a gorilla, mimicking Jane's speech, mimicking the other humans speech and behavior, etc..
  • @KERRYPIKE
Kala is a great and incredible adopted mother to Tarzan, and she didn't care if Tarzan was a human she truly loved him for he was. And Tarzan is so lucky to have a wonderfull adopted mother like Kala in his life.
  • Funny enough, the least “traditional” Disney movies are some of my favorites, I don’t need full on broadway singing. Treasure Planet, Atlantis, and Tarzan don’t have the usual character songs, but I loooooooove the movies almost because they’re different from the norm. The music tells the story so beautifully, without everyone bursting into song every 5 minutes. Love it. Criminally under appreciated.
  • Fun fact: In the books, it's explained that Tarzan's name comes from the fictional ape-speak words "Tar" and "Zan," which respectively mean "white skin."
  • I absolutely love the showdown with Clayton, especially when he tells Tarzan to "be a man", and the response is "Not a man like you." For a movie all about making choices and figuring out who and where you're supposed to be it's a very powerful message. Also I noticed you called Terk a he, but actually she's a she! She's played by the famous comedian Rosie O'Donnell, and her full name is Terkana, lol
  • I'm from Germany and I think it's great that Phil Collins sang the songs in different languages for the different countries! Hear him sing in german was strange, but he did it very well!
  • @WILIZIN
7:25 Actually the orignal Tarzan yell was really from a human. He was an opera singer though, that's why it was so loud and unique.
  • Jane is one of my favorite female characters of Disney too!! she is just so funny, relatable and curious!
  • @screamman1497
I think we can all say that Clayton’s death was one of the most darkest in Disney films
  • This movie means so much to me. As someone who was adopted as a baby with very little contact with my birth mom and not knowing my biological father at all..... This movie has a huge piece of my heart, especially the rawness with which they portrayed the love between Kala and Tarzan. Thank you for reacting to this!

The music in this movie impacted my childhood. Phil Collins is a wonderful musician. He packed the songs with such deep meaning, every line in Son of Man is a life lesson

In order to do the vine surfing scenes Disney had to develop a specific cg method to integrate 2d and 3d animation known as Deep Canvas. This same method was later used extensively in Treasure Planet. On a side note, Deep Canvas is particularly expensive and time consuming to use and was one of the reasons the Disney higher ups did not like the Treasure Planet project (which wound up being one of the most expensive animated movies Disney ever released)
  • 11:00 Kala is an amazing mother! She's patient and loving, and it motivated Tarzan as well. Now this, puts a smile on my face 😌
  • if you think Phil Collins did great singing Tarzan's songs, wait until you hear him singing in all these extra-languages: Italian, French, German and Spanish

Most Disney movies went hard when it came to the soundtrack and Phil Collins understood the assignment. Growing older I grow to understand that Kerchak wasn't as antagonistic as a character as you'd see him from a child's eyes, instead he's a leader who can't afford to show weakness in order to protect the group, but he also has to quietly grieve his beloved son - who he likely watched get mauled by Sabor and spared Kala the sight - while Kala brought in a human, which he seems familiar of their threat, expecting him to treat him like another son. He of course held onto his grudge a long time, but with Tarzan taking the fall for others he inadvertently inflated Kerchak's scapegoating, all the way up until Tarzan kills Sabor. Despite being robbed of revenge for his son, while Tarzan unwittingly avenges his biological parents, Kerchak became more willing to accept Tarzan from there, but then he started hanging around more humans searching for them, he gave Tarzan a responsibility to protect the family and he betrayed that trust and then physically restrained him - diminishing his role as leader - before Clayton then attacked and almost succeeded in kidnapping the entire family group.
  • I like how the branches and environment are cg models, the artists hand paint the models so it still has the painted look (like the clouds on Olympus in Hercules), side note I like how you can visually tell Clayton is the human villain by his coloring (his jacket is the same as Sabors main fur) and the first time we see him the shadows from the treetops on him resemble spots similar to Sabors.
  • I think I saw behind the scenes of how Tarzan goes through the trees, the animators were studying skateboarders and surfers for reference of the movements. Clayton kind of reminds me of Gaston from Beauty and the Beast. There's a Disney fan theory that Jane ancestor is Belle from Beauty and the Beast, she has the tea collection, wears alot of yellow dresses like Belles dress.

a fun fact. Tony Goldwyn the actor who voiced Tarzan. couldn't do the iconic tarzan yodel with his voice. but actor Brian Blessed who voices Clayton could do the yodel. so every time you hear tarzan do the yodel it's actually brian blessed. (also available on YouTube) and another fact Sabor the cheetah has the same colors as Clayton. the fur is the same color as his jacket and the tongue of sabor is the same color as the scarf of clayton. and when Clayton first comes into the picture. you see the shadow of the trees shining over clayton. so they stand for the spots. Once sabor is dead clayton comes into the picture.😉
