Me: Oh, her first shield, surely she'll go for a simple des--- Martina: So I decided to make an incredibly intricate build with dozens of small parts and fine details. Me: Ah, yes, of course.
  • @natemansur
The greatest line said by a YouTuber “people in the comments get mad and that’s funny”. Martina knows her audience. Keep building amazing things

Next time on Nerdforge: i made my own weapon, my personal castle and a whole kingdom out of wood, leather and EVA foam.

One day, a dark sorcerer steps through a portal into our world with the intention enslaving us all. He finds himself in someone's home. He takes one look at all the spell tomes, including one made of metal, the potion bottle, the glowing runes, the glowing crystal, the magic staff, the magic wand, the armor, the shield... He thinks to himself "I am in the home of a most formidable magic user." Then he turns around and nopes the heck out of there back to his world. Thus ends the tale of how Nerdforge saved the world without realizing it.

Frankly, I'm not stopping watching until I see you make a full lifesized medieval village and castle. You know it's going to be the natural progression.
  • I didn't know there was a whole community of people who made fantasy items out of materials that weren't foam for once. Really nice
  • @tomroberts9132
Actually Martina there were many shields that had the "holes" in the sides. They were often used for "shield walls" where the guardsman could shove his spear through the shield at oncoming enemies.
  • Don't know if you will make a custom sword or use the one you pose with, but you definitely need a scabbard! And if going to a cosplay event, you probably also want some kind of matching money belt or pouch (or maybe you'll just have Hansi dressed up as your servent and let him handle mundane parts like paying - what do I know?).

Gil-Galad was an Elven King Of him the harpers sadly sing The last who's land was fair and free Between the mountains and the sea His sword was long His lance was keen His shining helm afair was seen The countless stars of Heaven's field Were mirrored in his silver shield
  • @MangaMan108
This needs a spear or some kind of pole arm, those groves in the shield would be perfect to brace a spear to block an enemy charge
  • @rensiknosaj
It doesn't need a Fantasy explanation: ceremonial shields existed. Their whole point was decoration and not function, though their designs were based more on actual shield designs of the time.
  • @ReviewyCA
"This is my shield. I want it to be like this, okay?" All the justification you need, right there!
  • @grannybucks
Being a professional carpenter with over 20 years exp. I'm actually a bit impressed, and I think what matters is the final product,in that. Excellent job! It looks very cool. And I'm now a subscriber! 🤘

Martina: sometimes I work too fast and I make mistakes me: the life of a crafter with ADHD, in one sentence.
  • Next up: martina makes a sword for her shield to slaughter her enemies
  • @MrHrannsi
After the first lamination glue up thingy, it really looked like a Roman scutum.
  • @Avetho
This type of shield has two notable, unique uses that I can see: 1. The bottom of the teardrop could be sharpened like a pike as a heavy stabbing weapon or to spike the shield into the ground for stationary cover 2. The ornate cutouts on the side would be reinforced against shear force to provide a method of trapping the sword of an enemy, allowing you to disarm them Kind of 3. In a magical setting, which emphatically and quite unfortunately reality is not (or fortunately depending on your faith in humanity), that large purple shield boss could be a gem enchanted to generate a surface boundary layer over the connected, mana-conductive shield metal (perhaps mithril) that allows it to withstand greater physical impacts via diffusing the force vectors outwards, or to ward off magical projectiles by way of mana dispersal or even absorption and conversion of the mana into the gem as extra fuel to maintain the barrier.
