International Jazz Day 2023 with Kaitaia College & Kaitaia Community Voices

Well, wasn't quite the day we hoped it would be - Here in NZ today April 30th, 2023 - we are bracing through a storm. Then a few hours before our Livestream performance - we experience a power cut due to the weather and throws all our plans up in the air. Thankfully - our small group of parents / students and staff who were ready and willing to help, support, set-up, turn up and just be there for our students regardless of the days events - meant that we moved on with a slightly adjusted plan that anticipated another power outage.
With a lovely small but enthusiastic audience of supporters and our students ready to keep going - we filmed this short performance as our expression of the sentiments and joy of INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY 2023.

Our students are relatively new to jazz as a musical style and language with regards to the contexts and spaces they are now performing in and competing in - realising that is a much bigger world out there and even more importantly - that they have the talent and ability to do well in that pathway should they choose to. Our brass section students have all been learning brass for around a year or less so the music I arranged needed to suit where they are at during this stage of their musical journey and development. I'd like to acknowledge Sana Kobayashi who is an exchange student from Japan visiting our school Kaitaia College for 2 terms this year. How lucky are we that she turned out to be a solid tenor saxophone player and fitted so well within our group.
