Hero's Journey: Learn to be strong and overcome fear through trial and hardship so you can rescue your community. Narcissist's Journey: Demonstrate your natural superiority and receive the praise and recognition you are entitled to.

Palpatine won. He wanted Rey to kill him and he would inhabit her. She did that. Then Rey Palpatine took the Skywalker name after the last bit of Skywalker blood was vanquished. The emperor's bloodline remains.

The Disney Star Wars trilogy is really the propaganda holofilm series that seeks to legitimize the reign of Goddess Empress Rey Skywalker - may everyone love her and despair!
  • That last part, Rey taking the name of Skywalker is what got me. It is JJ literally telling us all that "yes this is fanfiction".

The Disney trilogy is like trying to sleep with high fever after having watched Star Wars.

Your insight on the Disney Trilogy is 100% spot on, David. The Fan Fantasy Dream concept encapsulates the entire trilogy in a nutshell. And this is precisely why this trilogy will not age well in the coming years.

If only they could pass the whole thing off as a bad dream and start the last trilogy over.

The prequels were about the father and the OT was about the fathers offspring. This sequel was about a stranger that turns out to be the offspring of the bad guy who steals the ID of the hero.

I called "The Force Awakens" "a movie version of J.J. Abrams's hazy childhood memories about Star Wars".

This is the most coherent and holistically explained review of Disney Star Wars I've heard. Kudos and bravo! You've helped us all finally get some closure with this awful presentation from Disney. For other directions... How about some videos that focus on the importance of writing before turning to film? The Expanse seems to be nailing that right now.

Fanfiction is unlike Disney star wars media in the fact that there is actually some well written and enjoyable fanfiction out there, unlike any of the star wars movies/books/tv shows under Disney
  • @smashstuff86
What if we considered the sequel trilogy as a distorted retelling of the original trilogy, told thousands of years later?
  • @themobseat
The "Fan Fantasy" concept holds especially true for Rey. If a fan girl imagined herself in a Star Wars movie, she wouldn't want any personal struggles, but simply to be the best of the best.

There is something you touched on and not many people actually talk about when discussing the Last Jedi. From the beginning, I always said the Last Jedi was just a rehash of Empire Strikes Back. I would go as far as saying the so-called "subversing of expectations" was Rian Johnson's attempt at making his own Empire. Empire in many ways, subeverted the audiences expectations. And Rian Johnson thought he was doing the same. But Empire did that, while also respecting and acknowledging what came before and also delivering a far more satisfying sequel for the audience. But everything about Last Jedi is just Empire from the "salt" planet (which is just Hoth) to the chase in space to the Rebels having to evacuate their base to the young Jedi prospect wanting to be trained by a reluctant master to the main hero learning a disturbing truth about their origins. I can go on and on. Last Jedi really isn't that special.

So "Alice through the Looking-Glass" but into Star Wars, and Rian shouting, "You're all just action figures!"
  • This is a really insightful, interesting analysis. I listened to it with my 70-year old dad (who was a journalism professor and studied story-telling professionally for 45 years) on our way home for ROS and he was super impressed, sir! Well done and thanks for all your other videos as well- big fan!

This makes me want a David Lynch Star Wars trilogy.
  • @AtzaltlCoatl
I think that, in Force Awakens, Finn had a ton of potential to be an interesting character. Oh well!

This is why marvel hires mostly tv series directors. Series directors are used to continue what was given to them faithfully. Rian is a director with his own voice (i like looper). Giving Rian star wars halfway through is like giving avengers endgame to scorsese, the tone will be really different. Yes rian did some breaking bad episode, but one of them is a self contained story about white and pinkman chasing a fly in their lab (i really like it though). The other one i forgot
