Glenwood Canyon, Colorado.
Rock walls towering over 1500 feet. The Colorado River coursing along the canyon floor. 1.5 million destination visitors every year. The canyon is home to a stretch of federal highway i70, the vital passageway that connects Denver to the west, with over 7 million vehicles passing through annually. However, in 2015, cellphone reception is nonexistent within the canyon walls, which is inconvenient and even dangerous for the millions of visitors. This is the story of the canyon, the highway, and the new state of the art communications system that is finally being built in Glenwood Canyon.

As a retired trucker based in Colorado, I've been driving the canyon since the final years of the interstate completion. Since the time of this video, cellphone coverage has improved remarkably. The tunnels can be iffy, occasional dropped calls, but great otherwise. Now if we can just get everyone to obey the 45 mph speed limit!

I think that mother nature had other plans in mind this year.

With the traffic jams, emergency communications are an absolute must.

Those are the best looking phone trees I've seen.

I thought this was from a Discovery Channel show or something! Damn fine work on this video! I learned a lot and can't wait for my next drive through Glenwood Canyon.

Spectacular landscapes aren't complete without the sound of automobiles speeding through!
  • Cell phone towers are the highways of information. The NFS / NPS refusal to consider them in places frequented by millions of travelers each year still baffles me in this day and age.

Have any carriers signed on with Canyon? Last I heard you guys they didn't like your prices.
  • 2:43 I question this statistics. Does the rest of I70 include the Eisenhower Johnson tunnel?

I watched the highway being surveyed, built and finally finished. It is beautiful. The background noise in this tape is distracting!!
  • It was just a matter of time. Kinda like the Coastal Highway 101 in Ca.
  • @juditha5410
yeah it’s beautiful when there isn’t mudslides causing the road to close 🙃

You can now call people in the canyon to tell them they are stuck :(
  • Oi pessoal !! estou assistindo pelo canal aos vivo aqui no Paraná Brasil, Send hi here in BRAZIL! 👋🏻

I'm supposed to have cell coverage in that canyon? Wtf??
  • Colorado needs another interstate quality road. It needs to run roughly from Longmont to Boulder west over to Grandby then west from there all he way to Grand Junction. This would take significant pressure off I-70 especially for traffic north of Denver into Wyoming and Nebraska. It would provide an alternate route for when the Glenwood Canyon is shut.
  • Every time I see a video, it looks like there are 3 lanes per direction, including the side road, which seems too much
