The pronunciation is definitely wrong. However, I am reminded of something Garrison Keillor once said, only half joking, about Danish: "If you see a letter with a line through it, that means you can't pronounce it if you are not Danish." Just to be specific about the line through the o: this is a sound similar to o umlaut in German or "oe" in French. It is a sound we do not have in English. But this guy just pronounces it like "oh." Also the double "aa" is a sound we do not have in English. But he just says "ah." Also, Danish is a "non-rhotic" language--i.e. it completely lacks the "r" sound we have in English. Yet he pronounces the first "r" just like in American English. In his defense though, I would say, that if you try to really pronounce "Kierkegaard" correctly in Danish while speaking English to native English speakers, people might not have the slightest idea what you are saying (like Garrison Keillor, I am only half joking).

This is not the Danish pronunciation! :(

This NOT how Danish people pronounce the name of their most famous philosopher. (As far as I can tell it is more like "Keeya-ka-go".) What we have here is a Spanish man pronouncing it the British way.
  • Doesn't everyone already know how to pronounce it the way it is written? People are looking for the original pronunciation, that's why the "Bring back dislike counter" extension is saying this video has over 25% of dislikes.

  • @Nemuneo

  • @al-Assas
You didn't even pronounce "Danish" correctly.
  • @Speedyrunnn
This is not the correct pronunciation. I am danish, and my husbond's name is Søren, so I would know😁

I am not sure that a person who has a rather heavy accent while speaking English, and thus himself imitating in this case British pronunciation should be so authoritatively telling us how to pronounce words and names. But that is not important. The way Julien Miquel says it is the right way. Kierkegaard IS pronounced the way this video claims in English. But in Danish language they say it differently. That said since the speaker and we speak English here then the correct way to say it is exactly how THIS video suggests. The purpose of speaking is to correctly convey information and names. Since the goal is for others to understand whom we are talking about in ENGLISH and not to preserve some tradition of "correct" language, then this is the way to say it as said in the video. We do not have to imitate how the speakers of Danish (Danes) say it.
