How To Know the Direction a Tree Leans

Published 2024-01-21
This is how a lot of professional loggers use to determine which way a tree is leaning, or which way it naturally wants to fall. Much of the time you can tell which way a tree is leaning just by looking at it. But it’s not always that easy. Especially when slopes, and multiple trees leaning in different directions are involved. Or when a tree is so close to standing straight up, it’s just hard to tell.

  • Good video Wilson, but...the surest way to tell which way a tree leans or will fall is to first determine where you want it to fall and then turn 180 degrees and that's where it will naturally want to fall. 😁🤣😁

I appreciate your extreme weirdness. It takes dedication and self confidence to reach that level. Thanks
  • It’s way more difficult here on the east coast where trees are rarely straight with big, goofy crowns. I’m envious of your tall, straight sticks without all the limbs. Thanks for sharing. Good stuff.

Cool video Wilson. Yallso is a word I am adding to my vocabulary 😁

Got my wife to watch you make her laugh, she's a farm girl likes your sense of humor, thank you from the both of us

Advice I learned from the late and legendary Norm Hall (inventor of the porta-wrap!) is to plumb the tree from all four cardinal directions. Extra helpful tip here in the Great Lakes region where we have more curvy stems with decurrent crown spreading.

Great video. Loaded with humor & info. Yes, I often stumble trying to pronounce"normal" word, too. I tell myself it's just because I'm conscientious. ( Yes, it took me 3 times to spell "conscientious")

Y'also could get a bulldozer, and make them trees fall where you want them to fall. May not get the desired results on lumber quality, and then you'd have to deal with the root ball. Or, y'also could get a harvester to make quick work of them as well. That'd probably get you better logs for milling, but I have to question the cost effectiveness. But I like your approach. Just get out there with an axe and a saw, talk to the deer, and laugh at the bears. While forgetting what it was y'also were thinking about to begin with. Thanks as always for the video!

Mr. Wilson, I'm enjoying your practical tree kraft videos and especially the woody humor. I think you probably have the talent for a new profession.....a stand-up tree comedian?

I enjoy your content. Yallso teach me something with every video. I now feel competent to go out and look at trees

I find that when I run into trees, I usually fall down! Your humor is subtle and addictive. 😅

Loving your videos and your sense of humor. I think the humor can be best described as, “Dad Joke Heaven.” Haha! Cheers!

I think the axe method maybe the most common for loggers here in the PNW. Seen many tree fellers do it that way.
