Watch this video to experience TWO of the world’s most scenic trains in New Zealand: The TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific on New Zealand's Stunning South Island! In this New Zealand Travel Guide, we’ll explore New Zealand’s South Island by rail!

The TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific trains traverse some of the planet’s most unbelievable landscapes. From Greymouth on the rainforested West Coast, we’ll traverse the Southern Alps to Christchurch. From there, we’ll head north toward Wine Country, while hugging the Pacific Coast, watching waves crash and spotting seals, dolphins, and other sea mammals.

The TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific trains offer some of the most incredible rail adventures possible.

We’ll check out everything onboard, too. Including the café car and its selections of tasty snacks and meals. We’ll fully investigate the open-air observation car on both the TranzAlpine and the Coastal Pacific.

My family moved to Christchurch in 1962. My father was the USAF Supply Officer for Operation Deep Freeze. It was the most wonderful 3 1/2 years of my life. I will always be a Kiwi at heart. New Zealand is beautiful. I loved it there.

I was in New Zealand once...and have always told my friends that the people of New Zealand were the warmest, friendliest people I've ever met. Loved my visit there!

I'm a New Zealander , it's so awesome you are showcasing our beautiful country. Thanks for making an awesome video 👍🤍
  • Thank you so very much for traveling by rail around NewZealand.! The country has fascinated me for many years. The trains have sure changed since i was last on then in the 1950s! Now i am housebound, so this was a much appreciated and fun excursion! Ive never seen so many sheep. We had cows here in U.S. A. In wisconsin. Very few sheep.
  • Kiwi hospitality trumps even Canadian politeness and Southern (US) hospitality. Absolutely some of the kindest people I've ever met. I miss New Zealand. Thanks for posting, Jeb.
  • New Zealand is such a picturesque country. The diversity of scenery is incredibly captivating. Wish I was born in New Zealand. So beautiful.

I appreciate that you called it 'The South Island' like the locals call it, and not just 'South Island' like tourists do.

I was born in Greymouth and at 4:50 is the old home I grew up in, thanks for the wonderful memories. And I see it was typical Westcoast weather....rain
  • Thanks for the lovely video as a Kiwi living here in NZ it's great to see our nation through the eyes of those who visit. When your seeing the country in your daily grind you can forget how beautiful our country is :-)

After watching this episode, the urge to travel on these trains has only grown...and I live here.
  • Even though I live in New Zealand, I had no idea these train trips existed. Thanks for the stunning views, something you can easily get by randomly sticking a camera out the window no matter where you go in the South Island. Jeb, you and Suzanne will have to start trying some New Zealand pies, stick to bakeries anywhere. I hope you guys have a wonderful time here and don't hesitate to stop and chat to any kiwi along the way. We are happy to make you feel welcome.
  • I did those two journeys in the opposite direction about 18 years ago. The transalpine had a carriage at the back with a u of windows and seats which was where I sat. And saw penguins on a beach near Kaikoura from the open carriage which was amazing on the other train! The open cars are truly fab! Two of the best train journeys I’ve done!
  • I visited NZ ,3 years ago before the pandemic hit. I traveled on the train from Christchurch to Picton. I am still amazed at the beauty of NZ. The scenery is just gorgeous. The people are so warm and friendly. I consider myself lucky to have done this journey. I am from India. Beautiful NZ, and beautiful people. It's a great country. Thank you, I relived my journey from Christchurch to Picton.
  • Boy OH Boy, you and Susan brought back some memories for my wife and I. Back in approximately 2012, we took one of our many trips to New Zealand. Believe it or not; I had lived in Australia for about 50 years and NEVER wanted to visit NZ. I eventually took my first trip to the North Island after my daughter & her husband and grandkids moved over there. That first trip as the start of some 12 trips were eventually made across the "DITCH". In 2012, the "Bride" and I (yes we had been married by this time for 40 years) decided to travel from Christchurch; down the east coast of the South Island across to Wanaka, then down to Queenstown; the Fijordland, and up the West Coast to Milford Sound, up to The Franz Josef Glacier and carried up to Greymouth where we turned Right and headed for Arthurs Pass then onto Geraldine on the west coast after which we went back to Hokatika and Greymouth via Arthur's Pass. We travelled on to Picton and Nelson then came down the East coast though Kiakoura. I immediately recognised the Town of Kiakoura, the railway line and the very roadway we drove down. WOW the memories came flooding back. We overnighted at Kiakoura and carried on down to Christchurch where our journey began. We spent a wonderful three weeks on the road, visiting other places like the Fox Glacier, Lake Pukaki, Mt Cook, Tiamaru, and many more places. Looks like we are going to have to get to NZ again. Many thanks for sharing our wonderful journey with us. Best Wishes mate!

I really enjoyed reliving my trip from 2006 through your video. I took 9 weeks off work thanks to a decent boss and as part of my round the world trip, spent a month in New Zealand, I did the greymouth trip on the same day they had a motorbike race on. NZ is a great country and should be on everyone's bucket list

It is such an awesome country. Been there twice. By far, the most beautiful in the world. Have been there twice and can't wait to be there again!! Love the vibe of that place, the people, the stunning landscapes, the way of life. I love Aotearoa!!
  • Jeb, New Zealand has the most fascinating natural scenery I have seen outside of the USA. The train ride you took from Greymouth to Christchurch is among the most scenic and iconic train rides anywhere around the world. I loved the South Island and Christchurch. However, I was there before the big earthquakes rocked that beautiful city where in the City Center was awesome colonial architecture. Would I go back to New Zealand? You bet, and I would do it immediately if I had the chance to go. The people of New Zealand were the friendliest I have ever met in all of my international travels. The one takeaway I have of New Zealand is it's a gem in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean where the seas can get crazy. Btw, the weather reminded me so much of the Pacific Northwest here in the USA.
