AE86 returns (after 5+years!) - Anglesey UK - Pt1

Published 2024-05-15
Finally!! I was able to put the car back on the track. Why did it take so long? It's a bit embarrassing, really...

The clutch was slipping, so I replaced it... only to have a brand new clutch slipping again within hours of use.

A seal was leaking, somewhere. The main crank seal was perfect when we fitted the clutch... maybe it was coming from the head? Yeah, but were? Did I need to do an engine rebuild again? I didn't have the budget nor the inclination, especially once COVID hit. So it sat.

Until my professional life brought me to the UK last year. I decided it was high time I fixed it and drove the 1200mi from my hometown in Spain to my new place in the UK in one 24h stint, minus a 45min nap. Quite an endurance stint for both of us!

Once here we realized the issue came from the distributor leaking, so changed yet another clutch, fixed the dizzy, and prepped the car for the next event at Anglesey, on May 12th.

I was concerned as I didn't have much pad material left, nor discs (rotors, US readers). But my budget was stretched. So it was either that, or calling it all off.

I noticed a bit of an oil leakage coming from the lower line of my oil cooler, next to the AN fitting. Was it coming loose?

I was able to tighten it and hoped that would take care of the problem, but didn't. It was getting worse. And I was already at the track.

I released the fitting and fitted it again, hoping it had only come off slightly. But no change. It was still leaking, bad. I decided to remove that line alltogether, and bypassed the cooler.

I now had to take it easy to at least be able to drive a bit at the track, as well as being able to get home under its own power.

As a teaser, in the next video I will have a clip with better sound, as the mic decided to actually work and register the sound as it came from the engine bay... raw, gutural, and very VERY LOUD. Watch this space.
