  • yes!! It totally overrides your hunger cues. This is the most damaging aspect in my opinion, and also why it's so hard to intutively eat after having counted calories for a long time. It's frustratingly hard work to align with your natural hunger again instead of "squeezing" certain foods into your diet just because you have some caloric "space" left, even if you are already full, or making space with unsatisfactoty low cal foods even if you clearly want more. Thank you for talking about this xx

This motivated me to stop tracking after over a year. Gonna be scary but freeing at the same time ❤️
  • I like that you recommend eating at a number 3 on the hunger scale and stop at a 7. Long ago I joined a group that recommended going to zero and stopping at a five and it never worked for me for long because I became so ravenous. I love your channel and have gone back to eating three times a day. I eat less and don't binge anymore and I feel so much better. Sadly diet culture was forced on me at five years old and when I was younger I danced so I had to stare myself. It's taken years to begin to get back to normal. I'm now seventy five but nothing is ever too late. You are a voice of compassion and honesty in a world of diet quackery and fat bullying.
  • If it makes you feel safe, and more relaxed around foods it may be good...if it drives you nuts just STOP.....

Thank you for this <3 Even though I'm already aware of how it's much better to focus on healthy and intuitive eating instead of calorie counting, sometimes the slightly toxic diet culture mentality starts to creep back in. So I'm really glad someone like you - who's opinions on these matters I respect - reminds me of the true sustainable healthy choice. Overall that's the reason I really like your channel :)

Interesting thoughts and while I do see it as damaging for some people, I do think calorie counting is important in weight loss and gain, because a lot of times we don’t realize we are actually overeating or undereating. So I would say it is good for a short while until you reach your target. By then you will be able to estimate how many calories you are eating without actually tracking and know how much to eat to maintain your weight. This is especially important as you get older. If I eat how I ate when I was younger, all the time, even if I’m still a little hungry, I would be constantly gaining weight .
  • I agree with this in general, but I would be concerned about someone who is morbidly obese and has a very large stomach. I would think intuitive is good in general, but I think a person who has a very large stomach (the organ itself, not the belly) would find it challenging to keep their food smaller. What are your suggestions for someone with that situation?

These are all great reasons not to calorie count, and I respect them. However, for me personally, calorie counting has really helped me be aware of how much I'm eating. Especially in American culture where it's "restrict/binge", or just not being aware of the amount of food we're snacking on at all- calorie counting can just help bring awareness of what we're putting in our mouths. For me, it helped me to not be afraid of foods. I knew I could enjoy a burger, while eating healthier food for later or earlier meals, without it hurting my weight, and I could see that logically in numbers, and it gave me peace of mind. I love using Cronometer, where I can track the kinds of nutrients I'm taking in, what I need to increase or decrease, and it gives me freedom to enjoy food without being afraid of it- because numerically I see that balance is possible. I know it's not for everyone, or even for the long term, but it has really helped me personally.
