On this week’s episode on the Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, we are joined by Bayern Munich legend and German World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger.

We join Schweinsteiger in Munich, where he won eight Bundesliga’s, to reminisce on his impressive playing career, including his move to Manchester United where he was reunited with former coach Louis Van Gaal and how things took a turn for the worse under Jose Mourinho.

The German international reveals what piece was missing in the puzzle of that 2016/17 Manchester United team, and which rivals they could have learnt from. Plus, would a move away from Old Trafford be best for former teammate Marcus Rashford?

Schweinsteiger has played under some of the greatest managers, as he tells us about winning the treble under Jupp Heynckes in 2013 and trying to adapt to Pep Guardiola’s style of play at Bayern Munich when German football was number one in the world.

Bastian also speaks about the impressiveness at Bayern Munich, Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben’s competitiveness and changing tactics.

That’s why I love Bastian! Gets “kicked out” of the dressing room, and we hear no complains from him, not even a single news at all
  • @niallherbert787
Can't believe what I am hearing how he was treated by the Club. Bastian handled that with such class.
  • @niklas8689
People outside of Germany dont realize that this guy is our Steven Gerrard / Paul Scholes. A whole generation grew up idolizing this guy, even if you hated Bayern.
  • @evasegod
Bastian is such a classy and well spoken guy. Nothing but positivity from him
  • Absolutely disgraceful how United treated Bastian. Respect to him for taking it on the chin and not running to the media.
  • @lkesvp
Absolute embarrassment of a club to treat him like that

That’s why he is a World Cup champion. Humble but full of talent and class….
  • Imagine trying to be this articulate, thoughtful, personable and interesting in a 2nd language. Absolute class player and person.

Just from his interview alone, how can you treat this gentleman like that, unbelievable
  • @yamahamoto
And he still supports the team on social media. Pure class
  • I cant believe what im hearing. He is the reason I fell in love with football. As a small boy i watched him at the world cups matches… that brought me to Bayern and i supported him always. I was crying (i was a boy) when he left…. And hearing this just breaker my heart. He is a legend in my eyes, one of the greats the sport had.

Never did I think that a World Cup winner, a champions league winner, one of the best midfielder of his generation, a legend of one of the great clubs in Europe been kicked out of the dressing room and had to ask others to move his stuff just because he wasn’t allowed and had to train with the U16s. He was sad just to recap it to Gary and he still loves the club. All the love to you Basti. Good change is coming soon to united. Thank you for your service to our club. Forever legend❤

As a Man Utd supporter for 51 years now I can only apologise to Bastian for the disgraceful way you were treated. You were an absolute legend of the game and I am disgusted with my club. I am so sorry. Thank you from true supporters for all you did and the love for us you had. Absolute legend.
  • @SoftcoreStoner
One of the best midfielders of my generation. He was an animal in the 2014 world cup final, won every trophy in the game. Disgraceful treatment from my club United. In this case I actually wish a player did approach the media.
  • @IceMoonie
The confidence Schweinsteiger talks on how he can handle Xavi is what makes him an absolute legend.
  • @kenadams3513
Gary's face whilst Bastien is telling him the incident of him getting kicked out of the changing room is priceless...He is literally open-mouthed!
  • @ianfinnity2732
Gary has become one of the best interviewers across all media. He actually listens to his guest and doesn’t ned a script. If just one BBC presenter was this good…
  • @itspaintosee
I love the clear direct yet respectful way that he speaks
  • @Magihyun
Should've asked him more about Bayern culture, overall German mentality at World Cup, time with Guardiola etc.
