When Claire Mathewson's husband, Stephen, unexpectedly returns from the 1932 Summer Olympics, having missed his chance to compete, he discovers train tickets for a romantic getaway to Venice that Claire had secretly planned with her lover, Gerald. In a desperate bid to cover up the affair, Gerald's friend Bunny lies, claiming the tickets are for Gerald and his wife. With Stephen still suspicious, Gerald scrambles to find a fake wife, eventually hiring Germaine, an out-of-work actress, to accompany him. As the group embarks on their Venice trip, a web of deception and unexpected attractions ensues, culminating in a series of comedic and romantic misunderstandings that threaten to unravel everyone's plans.
