DreamWorks Animation LLC (also simply known as DreamWorks) is an American animation studio that produces animated films and television programs and is a subsidiary of Universal Pictures, a division of NBCUniversal, which is itself a division of Comcast. The studio has released 41 feature films as of July 2021, including several of the highest-grossing animated films of all time, with Shrek 2 (2004) having been the highest at the time of its release. The studio's first film, Antz, was released on October 2, 1998 and its latest film was The Boss Baby: Family Business, which was released on July 2, 2021; their upcoming slate of films include The Bad Guys on April 22, 2022, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish on September 23, 2022.

Formed as a division of DreamWorks Pictures in 1994 with alumni from Amblin Entertainment's former animation branch Amblimation, it was spun off into a separate company in 2004. NBCUniversal acquired DreamWorks Animation at a cost of $3.8 billion in 2016. The studio originally made some traditionally animated films, as well as two stop-motion co-productions with Aardman Animations, but now exclusively relies on computer animation. Its productions, including The Prince of Egypt, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and the Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon franchises, have received several accolades, including three Academy Awards, 41 Emmy Awards, numerous Annie Awards, and multiple Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations.

Films produced by DreamWorks Animation were originally distributed by DreamWorks Pictures until 2005, which was then taken over by Paramount Pictures in 2006 until 2012. 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios) became the third distributor in 2013 and held the position until 2017. Universal Pictures became the fourth and final distributor and holds the position since 2019, as well as owning most of the rights to its back catalogue.

Imagine being an awe-inspiring animated masterpiece like the Prince of Egypt and being outperformed by the Boss Baby and Home.
  • @K0ira
Spirit, Over the Hedge, Megamind, Puss in Boots, Home, Kung Fu Panda 3, and How to Train Your Dragon 3 deserved so much more in my opinion, those were great films and should've been at least a bit higher on the list!

Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2 is and will always be two of the best animated movies ever made in my eyes. I absolutely love them.
  • It's sad that The Road to El Dorado was a box office failure. It's a great movie with gorgeous animation and charming characters

How to train your dragon was by far my favorite dream works franchise and will always have a special place in my heart. It was the largest part of my childhood growing up

Disney produces classics, dreamworks produces cultural icons, every single one of those movies bar the earliest were engrained into my childhood ❤️

Spirit, El Dorado, Sinbad, and Prince of Egypt were the four I watched on repeat as a child (and still do sometimes)
  • Shrek 2 was never outperformed. Makes sense, it was the perfect comedy movie.

How to train your dragon deserved more tickets
  • @PhantomSavage
I never realized how badly the box office did my Road to El Dorado so dirty.. Which.. I feel is a big irony, because Road to El Dorado is probably my second or third most loved and watched dreamworks film behind Shrek 1&2. It had original music by Elton John for God's sake.

I worked on many of these movies including the dragon films... HTTYD (the original one) did a really neat feat... in movies, you call the first weekend box office take VS the final number its 'multiplier'. 9 out of ten times, you multiply what a movie makes in it's opening weekend times 4 to get a good idea what a film will do. the first weekend on How to Train Your Dragon was far below expectation, and we were all very disappointed. but the next few weekends were a suprise, the film dropped down a bit in numbers in the second weekend, then for the next few weeks made roughly the same money... in the end the overall number was (still) lower than expected or hoped for but the final multipler was SIX times opening weekend, indicating very good word of mouth, (people telling friends 'you GOTTA see this flick'!) thus part 2 was put into production, we had a hit on our hands.

Kung Fu Panda 2 was perfectly balanced. It deserves to be the most grossed among their trilogy. The rise of the guardians was extremely underrated.

Four horsemen of Dreamworks: Shrek How to train your dragon Kung fu panda Madagascar
  • @snexiate5441
Wallace and Gromit is soooo underrated… I wish people appreciate it more. One of the best movies of its time.
  • @BetheyDawn12
Spirit is so underrated, one of those special under the radar films that always holds a place in my heart, like Babe. Guarantee makes me cry every time.
  • @easobento2735
It's a crime how underappreciated Megamind is. It's in my opinion one of the best Dreamworks movies.
  • @bungouyevsky
I love how everyone in the comments said HTTYD and KFP deserved better. Absolutely, these two series are the best trilogies of Dreamworks. Especially the first httyd movie has a special part in my heart.
  • @DarkJediFarkas
Spirit the Stallion of Cimarron was also one of the greatest Dreamworks Movies of all time.
  • @avazquez01
This does two things 1. Gives me an existential crisis about how old and depressed I am 2. Makes me realize how many classics deserved more attention.
