So there's an unofficial 'record' time for travelling to all 45 stops on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in London, of 1 hour and 53 minutes - but I'd never actually given it a go myself.

Until one morning, I woke up with the urge to do it, and headed out onto the driverless trains to see how fast I could get round ...

The 'Top Times' for the DLR challenge is here: www.explorerticket.co.uk/tubechallenge/dlrtop.htm

Other challenges are on the 'Explorer Ticket' website!

Some number cruncher at TfL looking at Geoff's travel on the DLR: "Is Geoff doing one of his "Runs" again?"

My favourite bit of the DLR is plunging into the depths of the earth going into Bank.

I love how people in London are always asking, "how much public transport can I do in one day?". People in most of the UK are asking, "will I see any public transport today?".

Why on earth do i find these videos so interesting?

As I remember, when the Stratford International branch opened, trains all ran to Beckton, except in the peaks, when they ran to Woolwich Arsenal instead. It wasn't long, however, before they surmised that more people wanted to go to Woolwich, so they re-arranged it so that the whole service went there from Stratford Int. Initially they had Beckton trains running to West Ham and terminating (a slick turnaround in the Stratford bound platform) but this was soon curtailed back to Canning Town. Hence the Canning Town and Tower Gateway trains shown on the DMI at Beckton. Trains terminating at Canning Town from Beckton all do so in the lower level platforms, so that Stratford Int - Beckton passengers dont have to negotiate the passages to the high level services from Tower Gateway, and also it would cause too much congestion to turn them round upstairs.

The DLR is so awesome to ride. I love the journey towards Woolwich Arsenal. The views are 👌👌

Tower gateway -“What side does the doors open on?” This confused me. Commuted to tower gateway for a long time, you can open the doors on both sides even if the announcement say that you need to exit on the right side
  • This is the most interesting challenge I have seen. A good way to see how reliable the Rail Transport is. Well Done.👍
  • Another 5 star video from you Geoff. To all the DLR trains and stations!

This might sound like a mad idea for a long series but I would love to see what is the most interesting thing around each station. (i.e. North Greenwich - O2; Westminister - Big Ben; Fulham Broadway - Stamford Bridge and so on)
  • I enjoyed this. I have fond memories of the DLR as when we used to holiday in London when I was a kid we stayed in a hotel in the docklands and always had to catch the DLR into London for connections.

Two months after DLR opened, I moved to London for nine months, the first month or so of that on the Isle of Dogs. So DLR was a part of every day when there were just 15 stations. From what I can tell, the area is a little different today.

I’m old enough to remember all these places when there was nothing there, West India Quay, a quay, Pudding Mill Lane ,some tyres, and Island Gardens, the foot tunnel. Time moved on and left me there. Wonderful scene in the Long Good Friday, Bob Hoskins at West India Quay, filmed I guess in 1979. Just sheds.
