When a living legend like Larry Bird leaves his home to travel to Dallas, and then give a speech at someone else's farewell tribute, that means a lot to the great player that Dirk Nowitzky was in the NBA.

Dirk had one of the greatest playoff runs ever in 2011. And Larry bird came out for him, he hates doing this stuff. So much respect.

I don't think Americans can truly realize how completly surreal it must be for Nowizki. For a German, white kid, from a mid size town growing up in the 90s it wasn't even in the realm of dreams to become a superstar in the NBA one day. For young Nowizki these guys were like mythological heroes, a completely unatainable thing.
