  • @Draugheim
As a drummer myself, absolutely insane to learn this song the way he did in that amount of time. There's a reason why you're my biggest inspiration Portnoy!
  • @Watjalukinat
It's wild to see two artists that you think of as being the very upper echelon and how much it takes for them to learn what the other did. Hope they have Danny come in and do Dance of Eternity or something.
  • 9:17 - “shoutout to Drumeo” shoutout to you, bro! I’m not a drummer, so I rely on you “drummer/reactors” (❤) to explain everything to me. And I’m so F-img here for it!! ☺️ Drumeo, and Estepario, will be responsible for a “different type of drummer” era, being able to understand and even attempt to play these songs… it’s going to click for a handful of crazy minds, and the next generation of alien drummer will be unleashed!! I cant wait! 👽 🥁

I always say the same thing. It’s one thing to learn someone’s part, but understand the process that it took to write it. The time and effort that goes into some of these songs should be appreciated more than the final result.
  • @paleposter
I like this video even more than the others bc you see him taking real time and sweating over it. It’s not a 1 time thing and you feel the challenge.
  • @Vampyre_Media
That Drumeo video, is really monumental. Understanding what Miike is actually accomplishing Herr, is tough for people who aren't musicians.
  • @NatPat-yj2or
Young musicians have to understand that it's not easy, it's normal to struggle, and it takes time. It won't come overnight for any instrument. We are watching one of the best drummers in history take an entire work day to learn a 12 minute song with 10 minutes of drumming in it, and he still can't play the whole thing through in one take. The only reason he was able to pull it off at all was his love for drumming. If you don't love your instrument, kids, you won't put yourself through this. Never give up if you are learning something that you love doing. The difference between success and failure is that you stick it out long enough for other people to quit before you do. Never fear failure, because we have all dealt with failure.
  • I tried learning this song a few years back, in my last year of High School. The time signatures are insane. I just count it as 6+6+4+6+7. Total time signature is 33/4, which is nuts. Giving this to Mike Portnoy was definitely a challenge for him.
  • @thefigure13
This video is inspirational for one main reason, it shows that even the best drummers struggle with some things. It’s for all the young drummers out there that they shouldn’t be discouraged if they don’t work something out right away even for the best it takes a while for something to click
  • @Aka_daka
There's a lot of ppl on the video giving Portnoy crap for taking so long to grasp it... it didn't even take him that long for how complex the song is, most drummers practice for months to learn technical songs that they're going to audition for. most of the drummers that learnt "Dance of Eternity" for the DT were practicing for months & some of them still stuffed up on parts & played incorrectly.

He seems like such a nice guy. I love that he switched up the sun glasses for the big guns complete with multifocal lenses 😆 Mr. Portnoy getting serious! And that was utterly fascinating even for us non musicians. Watching your face as you obviously put yourself in Mikes shoes was great. Thanks! 😊
  • I've learned a couple of Tool songs over time to play in front of a crowded club, and obviously it was a huge task, but the thing that has always impressed me is Danny playing whole concerts of multiple works of art that at times are very different from one to the other and going back to back is just insane.
  • @jamesking9280
I listened to the original video without being able to see it because I was working. Holy crap was this amazing!!!!!?!!!? I appreciate your take on this as this was a grueling endeavor.
  • @MoreThanDanny
Your accent is so strong in someways that I kept on wondering why you were mentioning sad notes that weren’t sad at all. Love the video.
  • I don't think he ever heard the drums at at wile he was learning the song.didnt see that pointed out. He's one of the best!
  • @ozzy2475
