Are caffeine skincare products worth it? Like, do the serums, scrubs, and facemasks actually give you as much energy as, let’s say, a Diet Coke, Monster Energy, Red Bull, or even coffee? Are you actually absorbing that energy through your skin? We put our caffeine addictions to the side to first go caffeine free and then test a new skincare routine. Just like Mia Maples loves to do with viral TikTok products and HopeScope with satisfying viral products, we’re experimenting with a whole new routine that could change the way we take care of our skins… or it may just be a bunch of bunk!

I am now just imagining ollie walking in asking to play some videogame with matt and matt answering 'sorry kid, dad is working' while laying there in his facemask and bathrope
  • @manifestedbeauty
Mat really said "I'm leaving but I'm gonna drop the wildest content before I do." And i love him for that.
  • @myrtokamilaki374
Small note : Matpat's significant daily intake probably constitutes him less receptive to the effects of caffeine (like any drug stops working after a while so addicts up their dosage for the same effects).
  • @TechnoTJ
Y'know, MatPats response, or lack thereof to this experiment is probably because his body has built a rather high tolerance for caffeine because of how much he's had over the years.
  • @fennwenn3317
I wonder if the caffeine products didn't work on MatPat because he is used to way higher levels of caffeine than the other theorists are.
  • @Lightinggames20
Fun ADHD fact: did you know that if someone has ADHD caffeine could have a chance of calming them instead of energizing them? A lot of ADHD medications do contain caffeine in them.

Just a note on the experiment design. It's best whenever possible for the study to be at least blind if not double blind. For example, for the lotions and soaps, put a portion of them in those generic travel bottles. Some participants are given the caffeinated product, while others are given a placebo regular soap/lotion. That way, the placebo effect can be accounted for. Otherwise, for something as vague as "feeling more energized", it's likely that the placebo effect could have an effect.

3:55 Caffeine withdrawals don't stop once it's out of your system. The withdrawals can easily last 3 months, varying from person to person and the severity of the addiction. If you're limiting the detox to 9 days, that "energy" you feel will just be the withdrawals subsiding.

How is it only 4 theories left? We are gonna miss you so much MatPat

I love how at the top of the episode, Tom just started losing his sanity, further becoming more and more of a perfect future host for Game Theory.

What I found most interesting is the "general haziness" described mirrors what my moderate ADHD feels like ON caffeine while unmedicated. I can do what I need to... mostly. Discovering Monster energy drinks was my lifesaver in college. And now that I've been diagnosed and am constantly and correctly medicated, I'm down to at most 2 cans of pop a day and never touching energy drinks. One in the morning if the pre-meds brain fog is really bad, so I don't forget things, one at lunch for the energy to stave off the 1-2 pm nap I naturally want to take. It's really cool seeing how 'normal' brains can and do experience what my 'abnormal' brain does when they get similarly starved of the same chemicals. It's an odd kind of relief, knowing with inadvertent proof that it really is a brain chemistry problem, not a nebulous willpower problem.

I never thought that one of your last episodes will bring us such iconic moments. And as much ad i love you MatPat, i feel like the best moment was when Amy and Casey where lying there with their masks and sunglasses 😅
  • The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem, we're proud of you Mat.
  • @rachicolate
Love that Mat managed to come up with an experiment that directly results in him and his employees being worse at their jobs 😂
  • @graceswan4353
ngl I was hoping this episode would be about whether caffeine actually has the skincare benefits that many products claim it does: affecting bloodflow to your skin, skin firmness (minimising fine lines and wrinkles), skin radiance (looking fresh and awake), and reducing puffiness
  • @NocturneRock
Matpat’s face on the thumbnail is my paralysis demon
  • @LordMekenshi
I feel you should have done a blind placebo test with non-caffinated ones
  • @Just_Some_Gal
I'm betting my life that drinking 0 diet cokes this year was Matpat's New Year's resolution
