We need destination chargers too, not just fast chargers, especially at hotels and in public parking lots.
  • There are over 1.5 million gas pumps in the US. The number of fast chargers is not going to surpass that for a LONG time
  • We have two EVs. we've never experienced a problem finding a charger. The issue is finding a charger, getting there, and having it be broken. Just two weeks ago, we went to Culver, Indiana. We usually stop at the GMC dealer in Plymouth to charge while shopping at Walmart there. Pulled up, the dealer went belly up, while the 2 fast chargers were there, they were powered off. No problem, I figured. Drove a few minutes to the Ford dealer. They have 2x 19kw and 2x fast chargers, but both fast chargers were both broken. So, in the end, we charged at the slow charger for an hour and went to stock up on snacks for the road trip. Had to stop at a fast charger at a Meijer grocery store for 15 minutes later that evening. I didn't actually need to, but I wanted to have a bit of reserve, just in case. So never a problem but inconvenient when stations aren't maintained .

Volvo is about as about as Swedish as Jackie Chan.

Not counting home chargers. Does anyone besides maybe farmers store giant tanks of gas at home?
  • @1rjona
EV chargers already outnumber gas stations if you count the ones at home
  • Compare how many charging stations verses how many gas pumps. I doubt there are more.
  • EV charging stations along major freeways and interstates will soon outnumber gas stations for a simple reason: The customer will have to remain at the site for more than the thank your typical 10 minutes per visit and will have to spend 20 to 30 minutes, if not longer, while their EV recharges. That means 2 to 3 times the retail opportunities to sell stuff to the EV owners and passengers. Why someone hasn't figured that out yet amazes me.

It's not the number of 'stations' its the number of chargers. How many gas pumps do we have, verse the number of chargers.
  • We'll need a 10 to 1 ratio of EV chargers to gas pumps since it takes 10x as long to fill. Wish it was easier for everyone to have home chargers.

It's hard to believe that less than 12 years ago, there wasn't a single Tesla Supercharger on the planet. Today, there are 2,314 Supercharger sites and 12,412 EV charging stations in the US alone and 65,879 registered level 2 EV chargers. As of 2004, there were 168,000 gas stations in the US. If you also add in home charging, there are more places to charge an EV than refuel a gasoline vehicle.
  • Can't understand why VW is doing another sub brand, they should use brands they already have.

Ten states have “right-to-charge” laws on the books. In California and Colorado, for example, renters or homeowners have the right to install charging at their private parking space or, in some cases, in a public area at their apartment building.
  • I live in a small rural city of 58 thousand in Arizona. We have a total of 8 chargers. Not station, just chargers. Gas stations are not going anywhere anytime soon.
  • Installing golf cart chargers is one thing. Having them actually working is quite another.
  • Scientists were cautious about commercializing a dry battery electrode process before 2025. The anode was solved almost too easily. But that Frunkin' cathode...
  • That's good news about charging infrastructure. It's hard for me to understand why so many are opposed to EVs although I agree about long charging times and the lack of infrastructure. Thanks for all you do!
  • Wow, the BMW in-wheel motor is a modified Axial in-axel motor with no upspring, which means torque vectoring and no complicated cooling lines on the wheel hub. We discussed this concept in our power engineering class 45 years ago at Michigan Tech.
  • LOL! BYD is throwing shade at OEM manufacturers that spend money on concepts that never make it into production! "We don't make concepts we make cars you can actually drive and use today!"
