That so-called "Yamamoto" blade was made by 堀井秀明 Horii Hideaki [legal name Horii Toshihide]. The writing on the blade is 皇國興廃在此一戦 "The fate of a Empire is decided by this battle." That was the message Admiral Togo signalled when he flew the "Z Flag" from his flagship Mikasa. These special blades were commissioned by the Suikosha [Navy Officer's Association] and were sold throughout Japan on navy bases. Horii's contract called for 914 of these blades, but only a few survived WWII. Steel from the Mikasa's guns were mixed with the tratitional Japanese steel [Tamahagane] and forge-welded together. Beautiful blades. The Horii line continues and all were/are employeed by Japan Steel; the forge (still used) is called 瑞泉鍛刀所 the Zuisen Tantō-sho [Zuisen Sword Forge].

The family who is making samurai today namely Mr. Kunihira Kawachi is a 15th generation swordsmith whose katana's are considered one of Japan's national treasure.

Don't take high value stuff to a pawn shop, they are in business to pay as little as possible and make the biggest profit as possible. Go to a reputable auction house.😊
