Welcome back! Today I'm driving a beautiful example of a 6-speed manual 2004 Volvo V70R station wagon, lightly modified. Much of the S60R / V70R was developed and engineered prior to the acquisition by Ford, which made the wagon much more desirable to Euro driving enthusiasts. With a 2.5L 5-cylinder turbocharged engine under the hood, AWD, Brembo brakes, and adjustable Ohlins suspension, the second generation V70R is an underrated sleeper with more potential to enlighten your family with adrenaline than the countless number of over-stylized crossovers that would follow in the years to come. Enjoy!

when a guy who sat in one million car seats say, that volvo seats are an absolute couch, take it as truth... because they are!
  • Most under rated wagon of all time. Motorway Missile. AWD. Brembos. 6 speed. Active suspension. Active yaw control. High pressure turbo. Gorgeous to look at. What's not to love.
  • I worked at a Volvo dealer for 9 years. Volvos are the only auto that uses boron steel in the safety cage, the V70 and all volvos can be dropped upside down, or roll down a hill and the roof will not collapse, firefighters cannot cut the door open with the jaws of life, they would hold a class in our showroom teaching firefighters how to get in or around the boron steel in the door. Our dealership was open since 1970 and not one customer had ever lost their life, but we had many shoppers who lost loved ones in the other brands when they traded up. There is not a single car built like the volvos up to about 2010, after that I do not know if they still use boron steel.

My dad had a 240 turbo with cosworth bits on it, and that was fast as well

    5 cylinders sound so sick

Volvo has never been boring.. they've been doing nothing but innovating.

Nobody talks about the crazy range of adjustment in the super comfortable front passenger seat. It can rock back like an Apollo capsule on the launch pad, and it can fold way forward for extra rear cargo room.
  • I own both an S60R and a 6 speed V70r. Fantastic cars in ever way with the exception of maintenance. Really great cars.

I have this same car in black and, because of the thin cylinder walls mentioned at 6:35, it now has a 2.3 Volvo five cylinder with an R head.

Volvo's are such a weird state of cool, especially the 5 cyls of the late 90's and 00's but also the boxy 2-, 7- and 940 models. I own a 945 Turbo myself, and I got hooked off a friend who had a 244 non turbo for years. It's such a classic and innocent looking car, and they drive/ride nicely. The 7- and 940 Turbo's have a huge following here in Europe, mostly Scandinavia (ofc) and they have huge and easy tuning potential, as they run a 2.3 cast iron block, that has been in Volvos since the 544 and Amazon and it's overbuilt, as the rest of the car is. It's such a sturdy, comfortable, reliable and fun car to run around in. Oh and the old Volvos are RWD! Everybody smiles and looks, even old people, moms, youngsters and car guys. Rarely, if ever, do I meet anyone who has something against an old Volvo. They may not love it, but none has anything against it. When modified both the old 2.3 4cyl and the newer different versions of 5cyl are very cool engines, and the bodylines on most Volvos are iconic and easy to look at. Not very exciting I must say. Great cars as I hope many more open their eyes about!

I own one. 230K miles, never had an issue with the engine (cylinder cracking) or any other serious issue for that matter. I don't drive it too hard, but enjoy a good sprint now and then. It's been a great car. I'm the original owner. My only mod is the IPD cat back exhaust, which has been great. Hope to do the IPD downpipe at some point.

I actually just picked up a v60 Polestar with the straight 6 turbo. Even more rare, made for only 2 years. If you’re ever in Edmonton I’ll be happy to hand over the keys to you for you to review.

I've had a couple of Volvos. I currently have a 1998 Volvo V70 turbo GLT with cold air intake, Simons exhaust, subframe bushing inserts, strut tower brace, and basically all new parts. I love Volvo. This car is so versatile, super comfortable, fast...and awesome in the snow... wish it was a manual... Never been to British Columbia, beautiful place! Love the mountains! P.s. no pen holder in my car... ha

Every Volvo from this one and down will be extremely valuable in the future, especially in Scandinavia.
  • I like the way you did this review. I'm new to my S60R and want the meat and potatoes of an interview and you got right to it. Thanks.

The volvo t5 of 05-07 is a awsome engine can easely handle 500hp unopend, the R model is not that good tho, they are realy weak but in stock form they are sick.
  • @karlporath8904
I love my V70R. It's my daily in Metro Detroit. If you see the "Caution slow moving vehicle" bumper sticker (my version of bait) driven by an old man with a grey beard, that's me

    I had a 2005 S40 T5 6-speed and it was a f**king beautiful to drive. Such good memories.
