Nice design, very similar to what I'm doing with 10" can and an old stubby thermos inner/outer (as a TLUD with secondary air-flow). The flue is definitely key for maintaining good updraft and has to be fairly tall, have to experiment some more but think updraft can be maintained with it a little shorter, guess depends on ambient temp. I've been looking at adding a constrictor type ring like you've got halfway up there, think seeing this has convinced me it's a must.
