This is just as good as Bach playing gets, on any instrument or ensemble. It is not possible to surpass Ms. Mascardi's feel for and mastery of this complex, inward utterance of the greatest composer. Casals had nothing on her. Even more than the cello, the lute with bass courses grants this music the unapproachable, unfathomable dignity in which it was conceived. Magnificent. As good as it gets. The Sarabande of this/BWV1011 may well be the most esoteric and subtle, and one of the deepest and most affecting, of all the movements of Bach.

I’m a cellist and have to say that this suite is much better suited to the lute than the cello. Beautiful playing!

The gavotte is among Bach's finest compositions, and also a great favourite of classical guitarists.

I’m trying to add up the years it took and the hours of practice it takes to become a virtuoso like this. There would never be enough time unless there was some innate grasp of the music and the inspiration of the compositions to inspire that time.

I have said this before, it bears repeating. Every time I hear her playing a piece or suite I have known for many years it is still like hearing it for the first time. If only she would come and perform in New Zealand, which is where I live, then I would be there like a shot.
