Let's not beat around the bush - Grass types aren't known as being fantastic in the Pokemon universe, but we do have access to a cool variety of them in Pokemon Emerald. Can we make the best of what we've got and use them to beat Pokemon Emerald's hardest challenge?!

We've done some hard Pokemon challenges in the past, but usually they were a solo Pokemon challenge run. What if we still did a really difficult challenge... but with a full team using hardcore nuzlocke rules, and with only one type? Today we find out: can I beat a Pokemon Emerald Hardcore Nuzlocke with only Grass types? No items and no overleveling!

Monotype Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
(1) If a Pokémon faints, it must be permanently boxed or released.
(2) Only the first type-specific Pokémon encountered in each Route/Area can be caught.
(3) No Legendaries/Mythicals, duplicates, or same-evolution-line Pokémon can be caught or used. If a duplicate is encountered, the next unique type-specific Pokémon encounter can be caught.
(4) Additional Pokémon may be caught for the purpose of HM use, but these may not be used in battle at any time during the run.
(5) No Items can be used in battle (Held Items are allowed).
(6) Party Pokémon levels are limited to the highest level Pokémon of the next Gym Leader or Elite 4 Member. So long as your Pokémon are at or below the level cap when the Gym Leader/Elite 4 Member battle starts, they can level up mid-battle.
(7) "Set" Battle Mode must be used at all times.
(8) No connecting with other games for the purposes of importing Pokémon, Items, etc.

Primal Groudon told me he's going to burn down our entire team with a Heat Crash if you don't Subscribe and help us get us to a quarter million so uh... please save my dear plants 😥
  • There’s something satisfying about watching Tropius being an unlikely hero.

25:50 Fun fact: Swablu waked up because of Natural Cure, an ability that cures all status by switching out the pokemon. In fact, the reason why Swablu was switched out was because of this ability

Sceptile is probably my favorite grass starter. So emerald is a good one to do this in for sure!
  • I thought to myself I wonder if silph posted. Lo and behold 8 seconds ago he posted!

Seeing this reminded me of Christmas in 2005. Getting this game for Christmas and playing at night with my flashlight under my covers. It's so surreal how time has just vanished. The memories are so bittersweet. Thank you Sliph.

Thanks for having me on thumbnail! Suggestions: please do some other types of nuzlockes too. Variety is the spice of life.
  • “Wowie got an Owie” I laughed a lot harder than I should have haha Lovely run Silph, keep it up

This video showcases why I love grass types more than any other. They may have a fair amount of weaknesses and drawbacks, but they make up for it with great versatility. Especially in terms of stat boosts and conditions.
  • It took me until shroomish to figure out the name scheme lol. Pineapple kush/headband possibly, Acapulco gold, Maui Wowie, Blue/Poison ivy, Bubba kush, White Widow, Grandaddy Purps, and Fruit rollupz/ Roll Up. Clever name theme this go, good stuff silph.

The variety of grass types in Hoenn are terrific! So much coverage and fun dual type combos!
  • I swear man ever since I started watching you all my opponent's mons survive in the red when I thought they were toast for sure, so I'm blaming you XD
  • Definitely a run I've been anticipating! Stoked to see how you'll get through a run with so many tough counters!

I did this too. I wiped more than 30 times, including one to Wally, one to Juan and one to Glacia. I eventually succeeded, Shiftry is such a BEAST. I was waiting a long time for silph to try it. Its definetly worth It, but I think dark in emerald is Just as hard. Edit: I did the ultra hardcore version, in Ruby, where you dont have lombre/ludicolo to fight Flannery, Winona, and Drake. And the final Boss is Steven rather than Wallace, so theres no realiable way to Deal with his Metagross (and Skarmory). Almost. Its doable.

Glad Ludicolo got some love during this playthrough. Ludicolo is an excellent choice for the RSE games: Good bulk, good typing for the region, solid power and coverage. It's a bit of a wait to get, but you'll be rewarded in the end. Great video as always!
  • Here's hoping you use Cradily in this one! One of my favorite grass types and definitely my favorite fossil
  • Good morning, good morning! Silph, have you thought about doing an XD gale of darkness or Collusseum nuzlocke? They are both technically main series games and would be interesting to see. I am 95% sure a dark type monorun of XD is possible as you get three dark types right off the bat.
  • Alright, this has been one of the Nuzlockes challenges I have been waiting to see on this channel for a long time. Hoenn has a lot of neat options for Grass Pokemon and some of they finally got the chance to shine here. Also props to Silph this run since I believe this is the first run where he finally manages to defeat the extra Steven fight in the end.
