Sharing the stage with the likes of Axl Rose, Slash, and Dave Navarro would seem like a tall task for most bass players, but American hard rock legend Duff McKagan has always made his presence felt no matter who is he playing with. The low end master for Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver, McKagan has play a massive role in shaping the sound of American Rock music. Watch as he and Matt Sweeney breakdown his approach to carving out his own space, his longstanding love for punk, and the Fender Precision Bass.

Without the Fender Precision Bass, the original electric bass, dance floors and rock clubs everywhere would be empty. As music evolves, our instruments change in lockstep; the end result is today’s version of this seminal instrument—the American Professional Precision Bass. Boasting a single Michael Bump-designed V-Mod split-coil Precision Bass pickup and the infamous ’63 P Bass neck profile, the American Professional Precision Bass gives you the power to make your voice heard.

The fact that Duff is well-loved in the grunge music community is testament to his punk rock roots.

    He's right. A Fender is all you'll ever need, especially a P-Bass.

"I dunno if I have a style as much as a conglomeration of so many influences" THAT'S WHAT A STYLE IS

Duff has always had my favorite bass sound.

@1:13 From there, THAT!!! That is the Duff McKagan's sounds to me. I think Duff is one of those underestimated bassists. In Guns "N" Roses, he was that hard kicking rythmic bridge linking Steven's/Matt's powerful drum, Izzy's steady dirty rythm riffs and those perfectly groovin' "Ace Frehley sloppy style" solo riffs Slash was pulling out... The whole thing was dangerously Rock and Roll and Duff's bass riffs was the element holding it all together. Adding the voice and lyrics of Axl when he was firing on all 8 cylinders was giving the recipe for the perfect storm...

Duff played some bass on Iggy’s Brick by Brick album. He’s got great feel as a musician. On Appetite he has some of the greatest bass “moments “ in rock history.
