Dartmoor Solo Wild Camp - Meldon Reservoir, Yes Tor, High Willhays

Published 2021-11-21
Hi everyone!!!

Really hope you’re all ok!! I’ve been feeling rather overwhelmed this past couple of weeks with work and various life “stuff” so this camp was like an amazing oasis amongst the crap 😂

I parked at Meldon Reservoir car park (£2 a day) and headed downstream to follow Red-a-Ven Brook up the valley. I then kept heading uphill to a path that lead from West Mill Tor to Yes Tor. That hill nearly killed me and my hips!!! The views from the top were epic until the cloud came down!

I still can’t believe how wet it was up there and I really struggled to find anywhere to pitch! High Willhays was definitely a good bet though and I found a great little pitch with spectacular views 😍

I had the best nights sleep ever after a great evening in Da Tent. I laughed so much editing the nighttime footage 😂 I am a little crazy 😜

That sunrise (what I caught of it!) was incredible so I really hope you enjoy it! After a chilled morning I packed up and headed off.

I am so chuffed that I got to Black Tor (third time lucky!) and Black-aTor Copse. So so beautiful and in the sunshine to boot! Just absolutely breathtaking!!!! I can’t wait to go back and wild swim oneday!!!

I really hope you enjoy this video!

Thank you again to Claire #wildbeare for her completely unexpected shoutout. I am still so humbled and blown away that you told everyone about my channel, you’re amazing thank you!

To everyone who is new to the channel I send the warmest welcome and biggest thanks and really hope you stick around! 😃

Thank you all so so much!!! Take care and stay safe!!!

Karen

Meldon Reservoir looks gorgeous ... though it was Ladybower right at rhe start looked very similar in a way haha. I definitely need to get down to Dartmoor next year. Used to be there loads while training but need to get some wildcamps in. Yeah dont get touching any Military equipment, dont want any Marines coming out an Osprey landing on your pitch 😂😂 Loved the waterfalls 😊 and the cap looks awesome with your hair 👌🏻 Even if you have waterproof boots, get yourself some Sealskinz waterproof socks, you can stand in the shower with them in and your feet are still dry 😂 just incase of those bogs! Absolutely STUNNING views though 😍😍 Always hate it when you get somewhere then the planned pitch doesnt go to plan lol. Dartmoor weather sounds like the Peak District 🤣🤣 Well done for still getting out with your hips, keep taking it easy and doing what you can. Only you know your own body. Good job 💪🏼👏🏻💪🏼 Looks like you found a pretty decent pitch in the end to br fair, id have been well happy with that. Glad those were people on horses, in that fog id have thought it was a wildcat coming to my tent 😂 Wow what an awesome meal you made..! Ill send you something on Instagram about the lighting 👍🏻 Absolutely FANTASTIC about the 1K subs you deserve so many more, you're absolutely smashing them 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Haha loved the dancing 😃 and think that was a hideous tick 😠 *THANK YOU SO MUCH for the shoutout and well wishes!!!* Really meant a lot to me that did 🙏🏼💚😊💚🙏🏼 honestly very much appreciated 🙏🏼 Oh WOW the sunrise!!!! Soooooo glad you got at least one golden hour!! 😍😃😍 or most of one anyway haha not a fail at all. Great brekky 🥓🥓 I love Sealskinz Waterproof Extreme Cold gloves, you can get 'normal' ones or gauntlet version but they are about £60 - £75 depending which ones. But, they are incredibly warm, super waterproof and you can still do things, use zips etx. Not sure if that is too expensive for you though (Santa's wishlist 😉 haha) If only that bit if grass by black tor wasnt so bumpy that would be an awesome little spot! Such a cool little place you were at on your morning walk... wow! Really really enjoyed this video thanks so much for sharing, THANK YOU again for the well wishes and apologies for what I feel is a super long comment 😆🤣🤣 Keep exploring look forward to your next one. Take care ☺ Chris ✌🏼

Heyy Karen, just seen this, thank you and you're so welcome :) Loved this video, I've been here! Went round Meldon Reservoir and up to Yes Tor, had a crazyyyyy whiteout where I could only see a couple meters, thickest I've ever been in. Then I fell waist deep into a watery hole 😄 good times haha. Don't know about gloves but I use a Zippo handwarmer - I'd be lost without it in winter! Have a nice eve, much love ❤

Looks like fun! Iove to camp- canoe and such- but theres always the threat of big ol black bears in my neighborhood! Your hair looks lovely with wave! 😊
  • @AlanMETALMAN
Well you sure did not go hungry lol, looked real warming too, which at this time of the year is real welcome. You have done real well to get to 1K so quickly and shout outs do held, so real nice of Claire to do that for you too. Amazing sunrise and breakfast and nice that you got an amazing nights sleep, as well as kept dry over the 2 days, cheers Alan
  • Nice one Karen I love the route that you took proper sight seeing tor 👍 Love black a tor copse ! What a monster tick ! Looking forward to the next one 👍

Noodles really are my favourite camping food, I now make fancy noodles after being inspired by Fun sized earthling👌👏
  • @BourneOutside
Loved that lunch spot at the beginning, Karen 😍 I tip my hat to you. I’d be more worried there, than in any woodland!!! Fox Hunters. Bacon 🥰 oh and,,, you’re a definite crank 😂 I’d be in my element on that place you came across at 43:30
  • @WomanOutdoors
You better rest your hips before your next adventure missy! No more dancing in the tent! Enjoyed the views such a awesome place to be in:) thanks for sharing
  • @maryshreve3644
Absolutely just love your channel. You’re one of my favorites. Watching u from Florida continue the good work
  • @RVAHikerGirl
You remind me of myself in my own videos, LOL. You are just so happy to be outdoors and it shines through. Your dinner looked so good! I am ever so envious of all you wonderful UKers that you can cook in your tent without worry of a big ole bear coming up on you because he smells your dinner cooking from miles away. It's always suggested eating a good distance away from your tent so bears don't associate tents with food in the US. Don't want to ever wind up as a bear tent taco! LOL! ~RVA~

Well, I watched in 3 sittings Karen. What a treat at the end to see that river - love following em. Well, done on the 1000 subs - it is exciting as the number climbs I must admit. But its the land and the adventure really and the very real vibration of earth that does it for us. Wow, such a boost. All the best. Mark
  • Fab video. Prob gonna binge on them over the next few days as just found your channel 👍 ATB Peter
  • @jannagel2893
My first time watching a video of you. You're funny 🤣🤣🤣
  • @Tony-P489
Great video Karen. I really like the river section from black a tor copse to the reservoir. There is a good wild swimming spot by the little concrete building with weir and bridge next to it.
  • @david_v2.1
Another great wild camp video and nice to see some blue sky. On my last longish hike I had pains in the hips for the first time, not good at all, so I know how you feel...but the sunrise and the gnarly woods were lovely... 31:59 not yet wide awake and squinting at the camera you are the spit of Alice Roberts! 😊
