1:31:22 "The thing that makes it fundamentally different from a library with a lot of books is that the library isn't rearranging itself every time you walk in to try to make sure you spend as much of your life in the library as possible" That sounds like a Doctor Who episode, thus proving that reallity is scarier than fiction.

I've never heard Myke be so defensive and touchy about something, holy hell. It felt like he was willfully misunderstanding Grey's points. Maybe I'm overestimating how much sense Grey was making because I already listened to him talk about it much more coherently with Brady, but… I don't think it was that hard. I think Myke just felt a need to fight Grey on every point because he took them all as personal attacks.

Myke seems to think Grey is attacking podcasts because he thinks podcasts are bad in themselves... whereas Grey thinks, given the algorithmically-reinforced desire for constant media consumption PLUS the ability for people to listen to podcasts at any time, it's very easy for that media consumption to choke out all the focused, non-media time in your life. The problem is the constant loop of background media. Podcasts are a versatile way to satisfy the urge to mindlessly consume.

I love subtle merch. I hate how every t-shirt has to have an enormous design all over it

I’m sorry, but I found this conversation extremely frustrating. I’m sure Myke is a smart dude, but in this case he seemed to miss the point of nearly everything Grey was saying. Is this discussion continued in another video? I’d love to see the topic revisited with Myke having a better understanding of the points Grey was making.
  • I'm a game designer and this topic really hits hard for me. It's shockingly easy in some cases to control people's actions and impulses to where you want them to. You can turn some of them with addicts if you aren't too careful, and in some cases that's what your higher ups want. I think the problem here at it's most core element is that "people are not in control of where their attention is going". I don't believe the goal should be to eliminate social media for them (maybe in some cases), but rather to educate them on recognizing when these patterns are occurring and to create strategies to have themselves keep in control. There are these points where people almost experience withdrawals when they've exhausted their stream of content so they'll just repeat what they are doing for a while and get bored (for example, watching the same YouTube video multiple times). I think the strategy should be to educate people on how these systems can effect them and enable strategies to cope with it. (Ex. Turning off app notifications, purging your YouTube subscriptions of channels you don't watch anymore, etc....)

I think the disconnect between Grey and Myke in the podcast issue is that because electronic mediums in some arenas have an algorithm to try to imprison you and keep you captive, that becomes a trained behavior and starts to carry over to other mediums. In this instsnce, Grey picked podcasts because it traps him even though the medium doesn't have the algorithmic basis to it. And so since he has noticed this pattern in himself in unexpected arenas, he was wanting to unplug.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but I'm not agreeing with you. No, I'm not disagreeing with you, but I'm not agreeing with you. Repeat for 1 hour.

The ikea cats unleashed commercial is a lot better than the lamp one. My heart is so hurt and I wasn't prepared.

First new H.I., then new Cortex?! Hours of routine, here i come!

Ugh, I just noticed that I am listening to this podcast at work while watching another video on Facebook about some guy restoring an electric fan. What is happening to us?

Music recomendation: the engineers - always returning [instrumental version]
  • @Klblaz
I don't know why, but listening to podcasts kinda helps me focus on stuff. I just did 3 hours of programming with Cortex in the background, and for the first time I did that with no distractions (usually I end up mindlessly browsing Youtube/Twitter/Reddit after getting stuck for 5 minutes on something).

Recomend the app Loffee, really chill quite music
  • @patkison
Music that is probably out of Myke's musical universe that he should try: Philip Aaberg's "Out of the Frame" album.
  • @Eekabagel
Hey dude, an artist named The Flashbulb may be some of the kind of music you're looking for. Also anything in the minecraft soundtrack or FEZ soundtrack. Fez in particular is like anamanaguchi.
