My HP G7 laptop had some really annoying coil whine noise, which was even worse when I moved the mouse. This video shows you 2 things I did to drastically improve the situation to a point where I'm happy with it in a completely silent room.

Let me know in the comments whether this worked for you.

Here's a link to a couple of scripts which you can run to switch between 100% and 99%. Just be aware that setting it to 99% will disable clock boost, so your CPU won't be hitting it's full potential until you switch back to 100%

I'm interested to know whether this works across all/most brands of laptop with this problem. And whether it actually ends up impacting performance in any meaningful way. I guess I'd also like to know why it does this at 100%, but not at 99% :/

Thank you. I read many forum posts calling the electrical static noise from the hp envy laptop being unsolvable but reducing the max processor state to 99% immediately stopped it.

Thank you for this. Bought my HP laptop a year ago and noticed the coil whine occurring whenever on charge a few days later. I couldn’t find any working methods and just left it to grow louder. Whilst through this method it is still somewhat hear able, the sound has greatly reduced

You are a hero! Reducing it 99% instantly stopped it in my Lenovo ideapad creator 5.

Wow. Absolutely incredible that there's a software fix for this. I'd love to know more about the science of how this works. Is it just not overwhelming the capacitors, lower pwm cycling through them? I presume current is the one thing that's allowed to change because of minimum voltage requirements on everything else?

Thank you! Adjusting the poll rate in Razer Synapse didn't seem to make a difference but as soon I changed the maximum processor state from 100% to 99%, the whine instantly stopped.

omg this actually worked. thank you so much, that high pitched noise was driving me crazy! I run an Asus Zenbook Pro

Asus TUF F15. It Works! Thank you!

Are you kidding with me?!, i will pray for you everydaayyyyyyyyyyyy yessssssssssssssss finalyyy fixed!!!!

the maximum processor limit helped a tiny bit, but what really helped was changing my mouse's report rate (i have a logitech G502 so i did it the same way you did it)

    Aqui resolveu amigo! Obrigado!

This worked perfectly for me. Im using a msi gaming laptop, but this worked just fine. Thank you so much!

Thanks for the tip about setting the maximum processor state to 99%. I saw your other replies about a script that changes it from 99% to 100% and vice versa and was wondering if you would be able to provide it? Thanks again!

You are a life safer, I have similar configuration I am using the G304 mouse with the HP G7 laptop.. Has to the be most annoying sound ever, It was either throw the mouse away or lose your sanity.. annoying af. Thank You for the video!

My problem is to do with the 2023 LG Gram 15.6" that has coil whine when on battery saver. Should I fiddle with the 'On Battery' percentage settings?
  • @n_hmwn
For me the noise isn't really gone but it does reduced the loudness of it, still thanks!

(Laptop) Asus Rog Strix Scar III (i7 9750H, RTX 2070) when i changed Maximum processor state from 100% to 99%, coil whine didn't disappear but was reduced like 80%. i'm getting close ;p - Only difference i noticed is on CPU's Frequency falling from ~4300Mhz to 2488Mhz when chaning maximum state from 100% to 99%. - I noticed that when i enter BIOS without changing anything while i'm in BIOS Coil Whine completely dissapears... i completely fixed mine! kinda. i followed every instruction from this video and it completely removed the coil whine, but now i see that "ACPI.sys" has now high DPC routine execution time (μs) (did 4 restarts, disable-reenable driver, same) (Can see that in LatencyMon) I'm not sure what is happenning but i'll do a new clean windows install again just ot be sure. Better having coil whine that a lot of latency. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKjw-uShTlo Reminder: If you're using a laptop, before trying to change CPU's maximum processor state percentage, first lower your CPU + GPU fans speed making sure that you hear coil whine and also to hear it better.

Oddly mine has come back a little after installing WSL2 for Windows 10.. I'm looking to roll back that change & return it to silence! Wondering if it's something to do with Hyper-threading :/ It's certainly not as bad as it was when the CPU was at 100% but it's still noticeable.
