Scientist reacts to Carnivore Doctor on Joe Rogan | Part II

Published 2020-12-21
Dr. Paul Saladino's claims on the Joe Rogan podcast. Part II of the fact-check. Yet another Joe Rogan podcast touching on nutrition...

109:38 as long as you have high HDL, increasing LDL has very little risk. very little cardiac risk.

common idea that HDL-c makes up for high LDL-c. this idea of the protective HDL-C comes from correlation studies. bag 2. when it was tested directly, in randomized clinical trials, bag 3, raising HDL-C did not improve cv risk. meta-analysis of 39 clinical trials:
“observational studies suggest a simplistic hypothesis for HDL-cholesterol, that increasing it would reduce cardiovascular events, but substantial trials do not support this concept”

genetic studies confirm that higher or lower HDL-C determined genetically didn’t change cv risk

bottomline, for heart disease, raising HDL-C probably does nothing and certainly does not make up for high LDL-C

LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides are helpful markers but it's well understood that the real cause of heart disease is the number of lipoproteins, the vehicles that carry cholesterol and triglycerides. In most people, high LDL-C and high triglycerides indicates high concentration of lipoproteins, but some people are exceptions and may have high lipoproteins but normal LDL-C or vice versa.

111:21 insufficient evidence to say high LDL in someone who is metabolically healthy is the same as in someone who is metabolically unhealthy.

we’re acknowledging high LDL-cholesterol is a problem, but maybe if I’m metabolically healthy, if the high cholesterol is the only issue, maybe I'm an exception? meta-analysis: lowering LDL-cholesterol in different contexts.
‘there was a reduction in cardiovascular events (heart attacks, strokes) in people with diabetes which was similar to the effect observed in those without diabetes” and “There was a reduction in mortality with lower LDL cholesterol in people with diabetes, which was similar to the reduction in those without diabetes”. they conclude “Among all trials, the effects of cholesterol-lowering were similar with or without diabetes”

So whether they had diabetes or not, they benefited by bringing ldl-c down to normal levels.

The quality of evidence and information here is pristine. Solid data by the handful which is well explained, without assumptions or blank spots. If anyone is having any doubts about what causes heart disease and how they can prevent it, they need to look no further. Keep up the great work.
  • @pioooootras
I'm commenting just so the YT algorithm picks this up and forwards on. The only little thing I can do so more eyes sees this. Good job, keep up the great work.

Just when I'm on the verge of writing off the entire internet as a cesspool of psychotics and mouth-breathers, I encounter high-quality content like this and my faith in humanity is restored.
  • @jmca_power
Let's all take a moment to appreciate all the work Gill put into this video Thanks man

Of all the YouTube channels I've come across, I can't think of any other whose name describes what it does as accurately as this one. You truly are making nutrition not just simple but also fun and exciting for so many people. A BIG thank you for all the effort you put into making these videos. Really grateful and appreciative!
  • @TeeJayDeluxe
You are a breath of fresh air. There’s so much ego in this area. You give us facts and don’t care about what choice a person wishes to make. You just supply the truth as we currently know it. Bravo and thanks.
  • @lubo2260
Science rocks. There are not a lot of people who have a PhD and know how to communicate a topic like this to viewers who most likely have no background in nutrition. It's real, honest and based on evidence that everyone can look up. Thanks Gil, I learned a lot today

Being Masters Statistics Major, it’s amazing to see someone actually understanding the outcome. We need more of you in this field.

Joe's statement, "We should eat that we evolved to eat" is a ridiculous point for many reasons. 1. Just because we evolved by finding a way to get more calories efficiently in nature (killing and cooking animals) doesn't mean we necessarily need that particular vehicle (meat). Nutrients can be gotten from many sources. There are no magical nutrients in meat. 2. Just because people have been doing something for thousands of years doesn't make it optimal. People have been smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol for thousands of years. Does that mean we need those vices to be healthy? 3. Part of our evolution includes ethical evolution. We now condemn outdated acts of cruelty like slavery, witch burning, child whipping, wife beating, etc. We don't need to harvest and slaughter animals for food. We could (if we chose) condemn that outdated act of cruelty too.

Rogan's guest, Saladino is nothing more than a marketer that peddles books he writes. He published The Carvinore Code back then and just this week announced that he has abandoned the carnivore diet. Great channel, Gil.
  • @ashurany
As a PhD in a different field, I am inclined to use some of your videos in my methods & stats courses given how well you explain the science and errors in reasoning. Keep it up!
  • @matheusbp628
Your channel is a true antidote against all the buzz and sensationalism of the internet! Not just because of what you show in your videos, but because of your aproach of giving the tools to the viewer to look for the (quality) information himself. Thanks a lot! You deserve no less than 5x of your subscribers number! Keep up this great work!
  • Another masterpiece of promoting science and being sensible on any topic (other than diet too). Same rule applies!
  • wow the amount of effort, research integrity, and general unbiased delivery of information is beautiful. Thank you.
  • @VeganSanatani
I followed a whole food plant based diet with suppliments of B12, but that is for ethical reason, and I try to find the best nutritional advice from both the sides of the argument, and you have helped me a lot on being open-minded. Thanks.
  • @kaboose64
As a medical reviewer and pharmacologist, I really appreciate the depth you've gone into and how well you've explained this info. Any HCP can see the cherry picking from Paul Saladino from a mile away.
  • @tvdw4055
Thank you very much for all the effort put into these videos! Fantastic breakdown, clear and concise. You deserve a lot more following. Hope these reach a wider audience.
  • @thomashugus5686
At 74 and always in good shape physically I suffered a major cardiac event= MI. I am now following the science and eating mostly plant based whole food and statins.
  • @ryanshout8652
thanks for taking the time to produce this content Gil.

It's about damn time. A down-to-earth YouTuber who doesn't have an agenda and isn't radical.
