Without question, a pivotal player in our health is the adequate and balanced functioning of the immune system. No matter what disease state you can consider, the immune system is playing an important role.

We now recognize that our metabolic health is hugely influential in determining the functionality of our immune system. As such, we know that our lifestyles influence metabolic health and therefore, with this understanding, we can influence immune function by paying attention to these decisions we make each day that are so influential as it relates to human metabolism.

On today's program, we are going to explore the concept of immune modulation and the relationship between immunity and metabolic health. We are also going to take a deep dive into new some very exciting discoveries as it relates to ancient foods that powerfully influence immune function including Himalayan tartary buckwheat, a modern day superfood thatā€™s getting a lot of attention.

There couldn't be anyone better to walk us through this exciting new science than my longtime friend, Dr. Jeffrey Bland.

This is a fascinating and thought provoking interview. To further explore this science, visit Big Bold Health: bigboldhealth.com/the-science

Jeff Bland, PhD is the founder of Big Bold Health, a company on a mission to transform the way people think about one of natureā€™s greatest innovations ā€” the immune system. Through Big Bold Health, Jeff is advocating for the power of Immuno-Rejuvenation to enhance immunity at a global level, often through the rediscovery of ancient food crops and superfoods. To get there, Jeff is building a network of small farms and suppliers throughout the US that take a clear stance on regenerative agriculture, environmental stewardship, and planetary health.

Jeffā€™s career in health spans more than 40 years. A nutritional biochemist by training, he began in academia as a university professor. Jeff then spent three decades in the natural products industry, working alongside other pioneers.

A lifelong educator, Jeff has traveled the world many times over in his role as the ā€œfather of functional medicine.ā€ In 1991, he and his wife, Susan, founded The Institute for Functional Medicine. In 2012, Jeff founded another educational nonprofit called the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute. Jeff is the author of The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Causes of Chronic Illness for a Healthier, Longer, and Happier Life, as well as countless additional books and research papers.

Zach Bush has been telling this for a long time now! Iā€™m a fan of anyone promoting regenerative agriculture!

Thank you both for sharing your wisdom and for teaching me more about our human condition than Medical School ever did. I am grateful for everything I learned from you in the last decade and for sharing your sense of wonderā¤

It's information, who cares how it gets shared and promoted. Thanks for the opportunity to learn this profound information.

Terrific foundational understanding of the root cause to so many diseases resulting from today's modern farming practices.

Ty Dr Permutter and Dr Bland! Another deeply informative discussion. I was thinking of Dr Candace Pert from the beginning of this conversation, and so grateful you mentioned her name and her connection to this topic and her brilliant research and discoveries into psychoneuroimmunology!

With all due respect, it is a gross oversimplification to infer that farmersā€™ only concern is bushels per acre. The fact of the matter is that these men and women live and die by crop yield, well, technically speaking, itā€™s their livelihood that lives or dies. Every action they make is a gamble they take. Their every move is a giant risk. That is, in part, the reason they are often hard to convert from long-established practices that are really causing a lot of harm (just like the practice of medicine). Now, however, there are several superheroes who are involved in changing farming and ranching techniques for the better. Itā€™s coming. The problem will get fixed. The blame is not entirely that of the farmer/rancher, but a better solution is on its way.

Dr Perlmutter what do u think of Berberine? Iā€™m taking 300mg per day for glucose regulation. Itā€™s a low dosage. I heard a woman who broke her neck and said that the Berberine caused her heart to stop while at hospital being treated for her neck. Wouldnā€™t her heart attack be more related to the broken neck. Actually she didnā€™t say heart attack she said her heart stopped for a few seconds. Iā€™ve been taking the berberine for about 3 weeks and I have not had any side effects that I know of . Ty so much . I take ur pre/probiotics once a day.

OMG THANK YOU DOC PERLMUTTER I WAS TAKEN BY THIS AS I HAVE FEW TIMES IN MY RESEARCH
  • Thank you for this conversation. I looked into buying HTB, but could not get it in its whole form, which is my preference, so I can either sprout the grain or grind it into flour immediately before use. I believe that is a healthier method. Perhaps Dr. Bland's company would consider selling both flour and whole berry HTB. Thank you.

AMP (or mob) grazing has multiple environmental/ecological benefits, not focused solely on yield.
  • @williamhenry3337
I have been taking Big Bold Health HTB for YEARS (and their Fish Oil). I literally eat pancakes EVERY DAY made from HTB. How many tablespoons a day do I need for results? Dr Bland say "high" to Gillian. She is AMAZING!
  • @Bitsurf24
It would really help to make smaller packaging for the HTB products. Easier for people to afford and try out for the first time, no one wants to buy a big kachare and then not use it

    Thank you both ā¤šŸ«¶ā˜€ļøšŸŒøšŸŒæ

I question peoples advice if the people giving the advice do not look healthy themselves.

Wow! What a serendipitous interview for me. I was just blogging about similar things. I love it. I will be reading Berlinski's book but I could not find Babel Science but found Science After Babel. Is this correct? I found it on Amazon. It is Science After Babel. I will also be purchasing HTB. Thanks for that as well.
  • @laithalewis9145
From where do we buy this HTBuckwheat?....great information...thx both of U..šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘

since discussion is a lot on polyphenol in terms of health benefits Iā€™m wondering if Dr. Perlmutter would be interested in examining the role of bananas and the chemical polyphenol oxidase that they contain in reducing or eliminating the beneficial effect of polyphenols. Dr. Rhonda Patrick did a YouTube short on not eating bananas with blueberries because they eliminate the benefit of polyphenol in the blueberries. What she did not go into is do we have to stop eating bananas at all to get the polyphenol effects of any foods Does that mean we should not be eating bananas at all or is there some time constraint that we need to have eating bananas or strawberries, avocados etc. and eating blueberries to get the polyphenol effect of blueberries and in this case this buckwheat? I cannot find any discussion of this in the literature or on YouTube !šŸ¤”
