it's cool to protest, let's go protest. what are we protesting? it doesn't matter, it's just cool to protest

Hate to break it to that officer, but unlawful assemblies are a crime in America. That's why it requires permits and designated areas to hold public rallies, and no, that's not protected by the First Amendment, just as being a public menace and disturbing the peace are all convictable crimes in America. This notion that anyone can hold a protest anytime or anywhere they want isn't true at all. You might want to look up your own states laws that make this very clear on how peaceful protests are required to be held so as not to cause a public disturbance. The only thing that turns a protest into a riot is a single act of violence or calling for it in public. We learned this lesson in the 90s with the LA riots, why do people of this country forget this. This could have bad faith actors in them willing to cause acts of domestic terrorism or cause other people to be illegally detained like some of these individuals have already done. Want to protest? Clear it with the city with a designated time and place where officers can be standing by if anything does happen. That's how it works in most US states and cities.
