Step inside celebrated Australian architect John Wardle's family coastal retreat. As the founding architect and partner of Wardle Studio in Melbourne, John has created a unique home on the Victorian Surf Coast intended for generational use. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding ochre cliffs and rugged coastline, Burnt Earth House embodies a deep connection to place and cleverly chases the sunlight.

In this exclusive film series presented in collaboration with Shade Factor, John guides us on a journey through the home, uncovering how his angular and precise design serves as a space to explore collaborations with artisans and craftspeople and embrace the unexpected. Discover how this home reflects John and his wife’s life journey and has become a place enriched with their collection of art and objects.

  • This one is special. What a privilege it must be to call that place home.

So many layered materials in this home, a true reflection of the Australian coast.
  • Wow, what a beautiful home. I love how much the Australian coastline has been reflected in John’s design choices.

Breathtaking.. I found myself getting emotional just watching..

Almost as if it organically grew up from the earth. Wonderful.

Incredible design John, adore the ochre materials inspired by the cliffs of Anglesea. All the design details are exceptional.. the study, fireplace and tiled outdoor table 🧡
  • John's family retreat beautifully reflects the soft serenity of its surf coast surroundings & the architectural angles & handcrafted materials perfectly mimic the cliff meeting the edge of the water. I love how the home frames each view whilst capturing the changing light throughout the day.
  • Australian architecture is phenomenal, est living, The Local Project, or Architectural Digest feature always deliver, however I can't get a sense of why my opinion of those interior CMU looking brick patterns bother me so much. Seems like a constant theme in Australian Architecture.
