Answering another question this week: how to get started in language tutoring! I discuss lesson ideas, tips on finding students, and my experiences as a language tutor. Also, sorry for any weird background noises. Not even joking, there are literally noisy bullfrogs outside my window that like to croak when it rains.

  • I just started tutoring English a couple months ago, perfect timing! It is absolutely true that we learn so much about language learning by teaching, such a fulfilling experience! 🥰

Great points. I've been teaching in schools for a decade and online for about 2 years. With respect to managing expectations, I think it is important to discuss who you are as a teacher and how that matches your student's needs and preferences. I tend to have a super conversational class and I think it really important that students learn the writing system of a language. One of the languages I teach is Japanese, so a lot of students may not want to learn how to read and write and some students may want to spend more time with grammar. If you can adjust as a teacher or they can adjust as a student, fine, but if not I think it is better to let them find a teacher that is a better fit.

Thank you for this video! One of my biggest dreams is teaching my native languge to someone. I literally explain grammer to my imaginary student out loud when I’m by myself uwu 🌸

Since yesterday, I've been teaching my cousin's boyfriend German and he is teaching me Spanish, as he is from Colombia. We both communicate in English, it's awesome!♥️😅

You really look like an excellent language tutor, attentive to the students' needs and the same time professional😊 I'm not tutoring at present, but it was a very interesting video nonetheless, thank you for sharing!!
  • I just made up my mind that I want to tutor Japanese this year and you posted this video! I think that's a sign haha I need to get things started :D

Great video Lindie! I definitely feel like I've learnt a lot about language learning from my experiences tutoring English online too
  • @Jdude217
I recently started tutoring Spanish, thank you for the tips! I hope to improve my tutoring for my tutorees with this advice.
  • @paulwalther5237
Even better than I expected. I'll probably rewatch this as I would like to teach English some. I have a little experience but not a lot and I think you've got this down really well. If I were learning English or Afrikaans I'd totally book your lesson.
  • @e_velog
thank you for making this video!! i’ve been wanting to start tutoring French and maybe English on iTalki, but i’ve been so scared to start. this helps so much!!!
  • @SilviaKay
I tutor English (it's actually my job) and I love it!
  • @user-zq7ll2fj8b
Thanks for the video :D I started tutoring japanese for begginers (online) this summer and finding a place to start is the hardest part in my opinion! So many people say that they are interested and never call back, or start classes and abandon after a few months... I have a four great students right now that really enjoy my classes and that I enjoy giving class to, but i wish it was easier to find more students, even by word of mouth it's quite complex (people where i live tend to want irl classes but that's out of question with covid)
  • Thank you Lindie for the video! I just started tutoring English and your ideas are great! 🙏
  • Thank you so much Lindie, I will start tutoring some students on English next month and I'm sooo scared because they are children but your tips are really helpful to start planning my classes, I do also agree with you when you say you can learn so much about your languages through tutoring, I have learnt so much not only about my second and third language but also I have learnt a lot of grammar of my native language that is Spanish, something that as a native speaker you tend to take for granted. ❤️ Keep the good work
