  • the footwork is phenomenal - but the key point everyone seems to forget is - the base is not always in the middle of the court. Your base changes every time based on your own recovery, the shot you played, and when your opponent plays their shot. This is what he has mastered and his level of dedication is far greater then any other player If you see after he won the 2008 olympics - he does a salute. Why? He went enlisted himself in the national army to get himself physically fit for the tournament. He beat what many people called the 'best player' (LCW - who was really number 2 in the world all along)with ease
  • I think in the beginning of his badminton career, Lin Dan also used jump pace method. He only walks later because he has truly mastered the fundamental of footwork & therefore, he can always return to the base position no matter how he moves....
  • @rkt2583
when Lin Dan jumps, opponent knows the rally is over!!
  • @baoyiyang
his footwork looks like walking but it's a combination of never losing your balance / great leg power / great start up speed / and minimal reaction time
  • 100% agreed to his strong footwork, but he had strong hand too
  • @tlDUB
its not about speed its about knowing what the correct footwork is thats why lin dan and lee chong wei play so effortlessly because they have refined their foot work very well with experience and know every step instead of always improvising like the new players
  • @hrmnhrs
Yes. Every movement is very efective. No panic move. Yet no delay in his reaction. He can reach every corner effortlessly. So he will not loosing position. He can smash hard without loosing his balance in landing. And dont forget the defense. He dive every corner so easily. What a talent. Sory for my bad english

This is so true. I never bore watching lin dan play badminton. the other athlete always has same footwork.
  • Great analysis! Very detailed and deep. Even the top coaches in the world would miss some of the intricate details here.
  • Watching this video on the day that LCW announced he is officially retired... no more match between LD and LCW. LD tweeted on social media: from now on, I will be playing alone, no more accompany.
  • the so called 'walking' that he developed now is through his experiences. it just shows he's really confident, he knows his step, his pace.. at least that's what i observed from his recent matches.
  • The best player with great positioning and balance. 👌
  • you should also notice the height of the toss that he is hitting and at that point of time lin dan can easily recover to the center and he never leaves his court open.BTW Lin Dan is best

all these games were past his prime... including his second Olympics. Lin dan was insane during his peak career because of his insane athleticism. he developed all these lazy tactics later. watch his first Olympic win vs Lee Chong Wei. he shit on him. score wasn't even close. and look at the footwork. drop everything smash everything. fast af and aggressive af. this video missed 90%of why lin dan was great
  • In my opinion, instead of "walk", I think the way he move is jump with one feet, which means there is one step ahead when he react the ball, whereas there is only half step for "jump". In fact, in tennis, we also have choices for "one feet jump" or "jump". Lol my English sucks I am still learning.

Its called shuffling back to base, very similar to horse galloping. We use this when we want to be playing at a fast pace, but when you're trying to play slow and relaxed, you try not to use this and instead want to be using what Lin Dan is using which is the most basic footwork that is natural to how we move. This footwork is taught mostly to kids because their legs aren't strong enough to use the shuffle footwork. For Lin Dan to revert to using the "natural steps" footwork though, a lot is at play. First, he's pacing the game very well. He knows what shots to play to take away tempo from what the opponent wants. Two, he knows how to place strategically that minimizes the opponent's attacking option, thus making it easier for him to defend. Three, his reaction time and physical speed incase things go wrong is just above normal, thus he can still get away with his laid back playstyle.
  • This video is worth watching and I truly enjoyed this video. What an amazing ?!!!🙏🙏🙏 Champ Forever 🏆🏆🏆
  • why Lin Dan can just walk in doing footwork, because his Power push the shuttle to the rear end of the court, so he has enough time comeback to centre with walk, the key point of lin dan strength is HE CAN PLACE THE SHUTTLE TO THE BACK LINE COURT, ITS MAKES OPPONENT VERY DIFFICULT TO ATTACK, u can see lin dan placing is so accurate, always touch the back end line court, this give u time to reposition to the centre with walk
  • Really love this guys, very intelligent player, thank you for sharing this video and agree with your analysis as well
