I had a neighbor that rescued a baby squirrel. After a year, she wanted to spend time outside but came in for meals. Soon she had babies and her instincts to forage didnt kick in and the neighbor stopped feeding her unless the squirrel would do tricks for her. The squirrel disappeared for a few days, probably trying to find food. She came back a few days later, very skinny. Again the neighbor wouldn't feed her unless the mama would do a trick. I imagine in desperation and frustration for her babies, the squirrel bit her. Rather than the neighbor understanding things had changed for the squirrel now being a mother, she took it personal and stopped feeding the poor mama. Of course I took over just leaving little bits of fruits and nuts out for the mama without her having to make contact with me. I still see her occasionally and she is completely wild now...thank you Mother Nature!! Moral of the story....when you make a commitment, it is lifetime for them, not you. If you can't help them selflessly, find someone that can. It took alot of self restraint but that neighbor is still alive today...lol

My brother saved a baby squirrel and named her Susie. He bought her a castle of a cage and when she was old enough he took her to a friend’s farm where she lived happily ever after. He loved that little girl so much. Sweet for a grumpy old guy.

She is absolutely adorable... On April 23rd of this year on an early Saturday morning my son was turning our compost pile. We had just had 2 nights of horrific windy weather. He saw something coming towards him under the leaves that stopped at his foot. He brushed away the leaves and a baby Gray Squirrel ran up his leg and right into his armpit to keep warm. He brought it inside and showed me and we proceeded to google what to do. We followed all the advise of different people that have saved Squirrels and now have an awesome addition to our home and family. His name is Geoff and we have invested lots into keeping him as a comforted inside pet. He gets along with our 2 dogs and 2 cats and will live his life out as a member of the family. There are times when we discuss the possibility of releasing him but he knows no other way of life so we decided he's not going anywhere. Plus like I told my wife I couldn't even imagine him trying to cross the road and getting killed not to mention the fact how much we would miss him...Geoff also has paralyzed fingers on his left paw which is a concern of him going back in the wild... He has plenty of love and attention and has become completely domesticated. He has little stuffed animal friends that he plays with and loves them.....LOL...We always say that we didn't find Geoff - Geoff found us... :) There are videos of him here on my channel if anyone would like to see the lil fella...
  • squirrels are so rad!...respect to that woman for helping a fellow creature.

    1) That is just the sweetest 2) No squirrel rehabbers anywhere close 3) I think she’s now going to be a squirrel rehabber by default :)
  • I have raised quite a few squirrels that were blown out of their nest. And you are right, they are sweet and affectionate pets. They love to interact. They are sassy and demanding. I am an artist and I would take one of my squirrels to my studio with me every day and let her run free. She would get the squirrel Zumiez which was hilarious and jump up on my drawing table and fuss at me and run into her little bird house if anyone came in. Tremendous fun. I also had an uncle who lived on a farm and he always had a few squirrels that he was raising. It was such fun to go there and play with them.

Spring 2002 I read two squirrels a male & a female I called them bart & Lisa I successfully raised them back into the wild. The following year I seen a squirrel on the fence I called it the way I used to & the squirrel immediately looked up & came over but kept her distance as I’m sure it was Lisa. the funny thing is she was planting acorns in my plant pots which were near the door I often wondered if she was bringing me food🙂

I really hope this woman puts together a book on raising squirrels.
  • 10 to 20 years in captivity is a long time. Never would have guessed. She's so cute. We feed our squirrels and they definitely have different personalities. I'm so glad Fern is living her best life, cute little girl that she is. ❤

She's adorable! I raised one. They're the best!
  • @heidibee501
She is adorable and she wound up with the perfect mom who does EVERYTHING that needs to be done for her. A lot of people would just walk by and let nature take its course. This was the best posible ending. I wish them both every happiness.

Do you know how long squirrels live for? Between 20 and 30 years. You now have a friend for life. They are smarter then most cats and dogs. Squirrels Chipmunks and rabbits are all very beautiful and friendly animals. But the squirrel outlives them all. Take care God bless you and your small friend.
  • @yukomattingly
She is adorable. To take care of animals are so rewarding, she is a great mom!!
  • @adrienperie6119
I like how people who rescue wild animals like these tell themselves they are doing it for the animal and are being like benevolent which you know I’ve done it and all but really we get so much more out of it than they do.
  • @pawsit6578
Your the only mama she's ever known. She's beautiful.
