The 5 SMELLIEST CANNABIS Strains in the World!

The 5 Most Pungent Strains of Cannabis

You’ve either got to have a screw loose or you live somewhere it is legal to smoke cannabis.
If not, why on earth would you want to smoke one of the most pungent – that means smelliest – strains of cannabis?

Why not get a large neon sign saying “I’m getting stoned” as that would be just as effective?
So, what is it that makes some strains of cannabis smellier than others?

The answer lies in the terpenes? (Pronounced Ter-Peans)

The what’s?

The terpenes – created by the same glands that produce THC and CBD, terpenes appear in the form of an oil and it is these which are responsible for taste and smell, when the cannabis is burned.

As with CBD and THC, the smell of a cannabis plant can be modified according to the strain, though it may surprise you to discover that terpene production can be modified by climate, weather, age and maturation, fertilizers, soil type, and even the time of day.

So when it comes to the top five smelliest strains of cannabis, what have we got?

At number 5, we have Chronic Thunder.

How can we describe this aroma?

A powerful combination of diesel infused with spicy pepper. Chronic Thunder produces a relaxing, satisfied high with a unique dried cinnamon fragrance and delicious flavor. This is a heavy-hitter strain

At number 4 we have OG #18

This is a multiple award-winning strain renowned for its ultra-pungent diesel smell with sour, earthy notes.

Several strains of cannabis have earthy flavours and aromas, one can only assume this was discovered by those who have woken up after overindulging, their head either resting in a plant pot, or firmly implanted in a flower bed in the garden outside.

At number 3 you’ll find Death Star OG.
This has a rich, skunky, sweet and earthy aroma with notes, rather than an overpowering smell of diesel.

The smell is also extremely strong, which should give you a clue to its potency, with a THC level around the 25% mark

In runner up position at number two we have King Kong.

This is easily recognized as it is a distinctive, very pungent combination of sour, spice and skunk.
If you Google “smell of King Kong”, be warned - you may not discover what you were hoping for!

And the winner is…..

Cheese, Gromit. Cheese….

Only those who have seen Wallace and Gromit in A Grand Day Out will get the joke…
Cheese strains are the most pungent of all cannabis strains, where the rancid smell of octanoic acid merges with the sweet, fruity tones of methyl tert-butyl ether (not to be confused with the Welsh mining town of Merthyr Tydfil) and ethyl methyl acetic acid.

There is also isovaleric acid, and the combination of more foul-smelling terpenes like hexanoic acid (which smells of barnyard animals) and methyl mercaptan (which smells like rotten cabbage).
You can see why Cheese wins hands down!

If you’ve know of some particularly pungent strains, don’t forget to tell us about them in the comments below.

  • A few years back I grew a strain that I called Rocket Fuel. it was a cross I made of headband X White Widow that smelled like some kerosene funk poured in a bucket of cat piss! I've grown dozens of different strains and this cross was by far the stinkiest you could smell this from a way off! I really wish I still had that pheno because not only was it funky and stinky but also super potent and made some killer extracts
  • Screw loose, I just didn't care, it's now legal here, I prefer my plants over pharmaceuticals.
  • @Gr33nDr4g0n893
The original UK cheese my fav strain but it was so pungent back then, I cant seem to find a really smelly pheno like that anymore.

Back in the day there was stuff that you could smell before someone pulled it out of their pocket. Skunks, Pine trees and Cat Piss were very common in FL in the mid to late 90's
  • Delivery guy told me that my candle "smells really good, is it green?" I said actually its purple" it was Tropicana Breeze
  • @s1ckboirari
smelliest strain i've had was apparently a super skunk x blue cheese that my best friend grew, he used to have a no smoking inside rule but his whole place stunk up so much after he started growing it he eased up lmao
  • @zenthomas9180
Personally the most pungent weed I have ever smelled was skunk number 1 that was in 1998. Love all your content 💯
  • @F4Insight-uq6nt
It's worth mentioning that the Original Cheese was a rare pheno of Skunk No.1 and was only available as clones.
  • OG#18 is extremely pungent! Glad to see Cheese making it onto this list. UK Cheese - definitely the most pungent smelling I've ever had. So sad to see that it doesn't seem to be available anymore. Come on UK growers and plugs - let's have some old skool strains to choose from again too.

Massachusetts here. Yes its legal in my state. Just harvest GG4 that stunk up my hole back yard
  • @acemanhomer1
why would I want a "smellier" bud even if I live in an illegal location? Because I'm trying to get high man, thc alone don't do as effectively as thc with terpenes of the right kind and balance. I'd rather risk getting caught and actually be high than get caught and be even more mad my high is already gone before I've gotten to the police station.
  • So many different smells that come from cannabis, my favorite strain is sage n sour It's so pungent that you can't hardly describe the smell just because of so many different terpenes I had it in a glass jar and I had that jar bagged up twice and put in a dresser drawer you could still smell it when you entered the house sage n sour is an exotic rarity, full bodied sensation
  • I ground up and mixed Green line OG, Pre '98 and Blue dream for my "walkin round weed" yeah, in my pocket in a silicone container I had people 30' up-wind doing the sniff circle as I'm just cheesing ear to ear...
  • @XoXitsSaruhh
I had some stuff from colorado, cant remember the strain. It smelled so strong. I packaged it a dozen times over and burried it in dirty laundry, put it in my trunk and could still smell it while driving down the highway. It was also the most potent weed I've ever had. I wish so bad I could remember what that shit was.
  • Critical purple has a very strong, pungent horse, manure smell as you would call it a barnyard smell lol and it’s hard to explain the flavor…
  • @shrimpfry880
i remember buying up my plug's last "mystery" 1g, and it had a brutal (although nice) melon-ish smell that could be smelled from a meter away. it was the best high i've ever had
  • I love the strain cheese. When I was having stomach issues cheese made me feel better and got rid of my heart burn for a little bit. Of course if I get heart burn now I will take xantac for it but before I knew about xantac I was lucky if I could get purple diesel or cheese.
