Okay, this is truly fascinating. I'd call it Overgrowth Chess, as if you need to take a machete to it to clear the way. It might also be interesting to see a variant of this variant where after each player's ply they move one of the neutral pieces (non-capturing, natch) if possible, making them tactically useful even in the late game (although their natural tendency to block flank pawns already has a significant effect on endgames, I'm sure).

Do you not like fairy pieces? I think they're neat, especially unique ones like the xiangqi cannon, grasshopper, the ultima army, or concepts like the iron knight, which is invulnerable to capture, the ghost which moves to any square but may not capture, the shogi lance and horse which can only move forward, or the xiangqi horse which is obstructed like a rider I'm actually writing my own general fairy chess program where you can create arbitrary custom pieces and play against an engine. Lemme know if that sounds interesting
