When one fascinating glitch takes over a speedrun, it is bound to spell trouble...

This video examines the Pizza Swap glitch (aka Chainsaw Glitch) in Elden Ring which became so powerful as to ruin all of the game's speedrunning leaderboards. I dive deep into the inner mechanics of the glitch, explore how it was discovered, further refined, and how it reshaped the speedrun world records, particularly in the All Remembrances category. Finally, the chosen solution for the leaderboards crisis is explored and a potential DLC and how it may affect the game's speedruns is discussed.

I hope you enjoy this combination of a fascinating story and technical details! 💚

  • So basically you force serpent hunters special projectile wich normally is only available against Rykard to shoot from the weapon. And because you use the Pizza cutters special wich allows for whatever Ticks it has to be applied to the Serpent Hunter. Thats why you have a gun.
  • Got invaded by a toxic guy in full Bullgoat armour who one shotted me with this glitch. Can't say I appreciate it as much as the Speedrunning community

I've never really been a serious runner myself but I'm a big watcher of speedruns and I can say that, at least for me personally, "no major glitches" category runs are always more entertaining and rewatchable. Someone being really ridiculously good at the game is simply easier to appreciate than them being good at hitting glitches, even if triggering the glitch correctly is actually harder than playing normally.

I remember pretty much the same conversation as this happening when the elden ring zip glitch was discovered, especially in the early days where it was unknown if it was consistent or even possibly hardware dependent. I'd argue that changed the speedrun scene, mainly any%, more than pizza swap since you could basically skip all boss progression and unload certain bosses

Cata is unreal, talented in both speedwalking and editing videos. I actually can't believe how good you manage to make them every time

This man somehow keeps doing the impossible. Just when you think you have seen the best cinematography in all of gaming documentaries, he does it better in every new video.

Another banger of a video! The editing is just fantastic, managing to perfectly combine techncal depth and great storytelling. What an absolute pleasure to watch!!!
  • Any%/All bosses glitchless are my favourite categories for Souls speedruns; it's way more interesting to see someone who's mastered the intended routes, even if they're not nearly as flashy as glitched runs.

I was not expecting the glitch to be what it was AT ALL. I was expecting people found a way to get the effects of the Serpent Slayer Spear from Rykards boss fight to function everywhere, not turn it into an M4

I don't watch your speedrun content all that often, but I love these history of speedruns/glitches videos that you make, my favorite being the one you made on the Goughless Kalameet. This one was really cool though, mega high production value. I remember Distortion using it in his Randomizer to get through Moghwyn, and I was wondering what that glitch exactly was.
  • This was an amazing breakdown to help understand how this works at a very technical level

It would seem a little silly for people to denounce the pizza glitch when move swapping is a huge strat in DS1 and most speed runners in ER use the RKR with Sword of Night and Flame weapon art glitch as they are all similar in effect by using another weapons move set. It does look like a lot of fun to use though
  • It was only a matter of time until the tumble buff moveset swap shenanigans were found

This has gotta be one of the best explainer videos I've ever seen. And boy have I seen some. Very comprehensive, only the relevant info, easy to follow, simple but effective / quality graphics. As a professional motion designer, hats off my man! Keep up the great work.
  • Love the hyper edited montage at the beggining and the rest of the video followed as a great content. Greatly explained and presented, love it
  • @dread46
Suberp sound choice and editing, loved that you managed to sync that drop in 65dos NMS music with your story telling, well done!

Who'd expect that bringing a heavy machine gun to a swordfight might be a tad OP? When it comes to speedrunning I for one prefer glitchless categories most of the time, speedrunners are the best of the best when it comes to mechanical execution. And a glitchless category lets those people shine while also proving to everybody that they could do it too without using the game against itself.

Here we are a year later, and the serpent chainsaw still works.
