YouTube Sponsorships - we all love them. Us the creators love the money, you the viewer love supporting your fav creator and sitting through an ad for a water bottle flavour thing you'd never buy. Many YouTubers rely on sponsors for their income, especially those who upload more infrequently.

There is no ethical consumption under capitalism but does that mean its all fair game? Many YouTubers have long term sponsorships with objectively terrible companies. For someone like me its impossible to dissociate HelloFresh from Kurtis Conner, or BetterHelo from Easy Allies. They essentially become company mascots perhaps unintentionally. When a company is explicitly bad, I don't think its too much to ask that they don't advertise for these companies.

  • I always assume that everything said in any sponsor segment ever is a lie
  • @annaphallactic
A YouTuber who does a lot of anti-cult content was recently sponsored by Scentbird, which is led by a cult leader. I thought that was pretty hilarious.

The audacity for Hello Fresh to tell the Youtubers that less food waste is a selling point for the company meanwhile EVERYTHING is wrapped in plastic. Need a tablespoon of cumin? 3 carrots? 1/4 cup of cream? It's all wrapped in plastic. I had a channel I used to love and they were very environmentally concious, they had videos on how to reduce single use plastic, always made sure to mention the chnages they mad and encouraged their audience, but STILL shilled for Hello Fresh and didn't mention the waste at all. In fact they took the time to tout the lack of food waste, but DIDN'T mention the PLASTIC

My sister died and Betterhelp charged me $1,000 for a 5 minute appointment where I was told, “go outside and walk”
  • @carrat1903
I feel like nobody remembers that better help already got outed as dishonest years ago. It's like when youtubers started doing established titles, when we had already done that once before
  • @Abbyga1e
My personal rule of thumb is to never touch anything promoted by youtubers with a ten foot pole.
  • @morbidsearch
Respect to Danny Gonzalez for removing his BetterHelp sponsorship after fans called him out
  • @-chloe-8728
better help was called out for being a bad company YEARS ago and youtubers just waited for the controversy to die down before shilling for them again. i'm so over it.

When there's a new video posted by Kurtis, Danny, or Drew there's a 99.99% chance you're about to watch a HF ad.
  • The minute someone says “and today’s video is sponsored by-“ I immediately start fast forwarding. I don’t even want to hear the company’s name anymore. I pay for premium, which is $20. And sometimes creators will have TWO sponsors for one video now!! The ad read will take up 5-6 mins of a 20 minute video!! Then they’ll talk about their merch, their podcasts, their other channel. They’ll talk about their other videos and tell people to like, subscribe, ring the bell, sign up for their patreon, follow their other social medias, and now most of the video isn’t even content.
  • I’m glad you’re calling out BetterHelp again. When I started seeing channels start pushing it again I was like “Wait, didn’t a bunch of stuff come out a while back about how they have basically no Doctor/Client confidentiality, fake therapists, and would basically steal your info? Why are youtubers pushing it again?” Anything for a paycheque these days I guess.

Love when YouTubers have an ad timer or dedicated ad outfit so it’s easier to completely skip the segment
  • @ichaukan
I don't care what any consumer capitalist drone says about Hard Work™. It's criminal that anybody with a single full-time job can't afford to live.
  • @NuevoExistence
Hello Fresh will do anything to complicate the process of stopping their service or refunding you or anything. I had to threaten them with legal action before they finally relented. POS trash company.
  • @madeofmeats
A little gem YouTube channel I watch called CharlatanWonder (does a lot of game reviews, typically indie horror/horror adjacent projects) has a segment where he does an anti-sponsorship ad read where he exposes some company that has contacted him and points out what shady practices they have and why you should NOT use their services or accept sponsorships from them. It’s a fun spin on ad reads and is pretty informative and admirable for him to refuse easy money in favor of warning his viewers.
  • @RileyRilesz
even anthony padilla constantly being sponsored by better help
  • @sophitiaofhyrule
I tend to be more lenient on small youtubers who struggle to get by, then I understand why they'd be willing to accept money from shady businesses. But multi-million subscriber channels owned by wealthy Youtubers? No excuse.
  • @dantheman2907
Last time I checked Kurtis' patreon he was making at worst around 16.5k USD a month. He's definitely not struggling financially.
  • @toshio1334
I'm surprised no one talks about Displate. They only pay their artists $2-$4/plate while customers pay $44-$80 per plate. They literally pay their artists less than 10%
