Lyrics
What have I done?
What have I done?
How could I be so blind?
All is lost, where was I?
Spoiled all, spoiled all
Everything's gone all wrong

What have I done?
What have I done?
Find a deep cave to hide in
In a million years they'll find me
Only dust and a plaque
That reads, "Here Lies Poor Old Jack"

But I never intended all this madness, never
And nobody really understood, how could they?
That all I ever wanted was to bring them something great
Why does nothing ever turn out like it should?

Well, what the heck, I went and did my best
And, by God, I really tasted something swell
And for a moment, why, I even touched the sky
And at least I left some stories they can tell, I did

And for the first time since I don't remember when
I felt just like my old bony self again
And I, Jack, the Pumpkin King
That's right, I am the Pumpkin King, ha, ha, ha

And I just can't wait until next Halloween
'Cause I've got some new ideas
that will really make them scream
And, by God I'm really gonna give it all my might
Uh oh, I hope there's still time to set things right
sandy Claws, hmm

its nice that he didnt blame others for his failure, he understood that people couldn't understand what he was trying to do and accepted that he failed but did his best
  • I love that Jack isn’t evil. He’s just creepy and likes to scare people. He shows that he cares what happens to people if Sandy Claws doesn’t show up. I just love his empathy.
  • Growing up, I heard someone say that the moral of this movie is a cynical “stay in your lane, don’t try new things because it will backfire”

But I think this song basically says that the moral is you SHOULD try new things and that even if it does backfire, at least appreciate the fact that you did your best and tried something new

This scene is legit mindblowing. Their rotating the camera in a STOP MOTION FILM and moving his suit tatters with proper secondary animation. MWAH. Geniuses.

"That all I ever wanted was to bring them something great, Why does nothing ever turn out like it should"
is my most favourite line, I love the way Jack sings it ^^

I love how Jack pulls himself out of his self pity and picks himself up instead of letting his failure keep him down.
  • As much as you feel bad for jack here its amazing the messige that the director showed with the fact that jack knew it was his fault but was happy finding out what he was good at and loveing that and sticking with it

    This is the song that plays when you get handed an exam you didn't study for and you had a whole week to ;-;

He stopped feeling sorry for himself. Accepted his error, accepted not everyone will understand him. He atleast tried and gave it his best. Dusted himself off and kept pushing forward, and make things right.

1:38 This is my favorite part Jack is so innocent and he was telling the truth he was wrong but he didn't intend to hurt anyone. I like when characters correct their mistake and learn the lesson.
  • "Why does nothing ever turn out like how it should? Well, what the heck?! I went and did my best, & my god I really tasted something swell!" Is a very motivated lyric!

I do admire so much that Jack took responsibility for his actions and realized that him being Santa was not meant to be most people would rather blame others for their wrong doing

Only dust and a plaque that reads "Here Lies Poor Old Jack".
    I've got chills now.
  • "How could I be so blind"
If it makes you feel any better you dont have eyes.

Jack is an allegory of the artist. The creative who gets completely wrapped up in the pursuit of executing their craft. Only to have hardships from the get go, detractors, sabotage, and his own blind hubris. All to be blown into pieces after all his efforts. But Jack despite his failures gets up and remembers at the end of the day he lives to create, no failure or success ever great enough to end his pursuit of living out his art. Just lessons learned to be wiser, kinder, and more humble.

Can I just say that I really don't understand the arrangment they did on the official soundtrack. The vocals here are awesome and, well, sound a lot sadder. Danny overacts in the cd. I want the original.

Jack you tried your best so don't doubt yourself i love you.
  • I love how happy Zero gets when Jack says: "that's right! I AM THE PUMPKIN KING!!!" it's so cute. I'd love to own a ghost dog
