Ever since news broke that Giganotosaurus was making a starring appearance in the upcoming JW Dominion movie, there has been a lot of confusion regarding how to pronounce the predatory dinosaur's name. Ever since the late nineties in documentaries I have always pronounced it GIGA, but lately people have been saying JIGA, while news sources like screenrant.com are even misspelling it as Gigantosaurus. What are your thoughts on this?

I know it's not an English word, but we apply English rules to a lot of foreign words. We don't say Jigabyte or Gigsaw
  • Hey everyone, also please disregard the paid promotion button on the screen at the beginning. There is no paid promotion and not sure why that is appearing.

Since the first part of the name is derived from the word Giant / Gigantic, and at no point have I ever heard anyone pronounce this word with a Giga or Jiga at the beginning, it should be pronounced the same way that that is said - Ji-gan-tic, therefore Ji-gan-oto-saurus.

The Acrocanthosaurus is a decent amount smaller so I think that's why they didn't really want to have that in the movie possibly because in real life most likely the Acrocanthosaurus would have probably just backed down from a T-Rex instead of going toe-to-toe with it or potentially rivaling it even though it looks super cool with a small sale on its back and much bigger stronger arms but overall it's body was a lot lighter and smaller compared to a T-rex or Giganotosaurus but I do think they should introduce all or at least a lot more of the Giant theropod meat eaters in the Jurassic movies or any other movies but at least they introduced the Giganotosaurus finally which was super cool for sure but they should have had a lot more different ones already no doubt about it instead of just having basically the same ones all the time but at least they finally had this one so we have to be happy about that.

Wow I guess I’m in the small, correct minority of pronouncing it Higa-Nah-tosaurus since I was 5 years old, because I was living in Mexico in the ‘90s and it was a Latin American discovery so it seemed perfectly natural to pronounce it how the Spanish would, with an H for a soft G. “Gigante” (hig-) already meant huge, gigantic.
  • It’s pronounced jia-gan-oh-toe-saurus that is the scientific name and even on google they pronounce it that way. You’re all wrong.

i thought it was like ji gano tosaurus

I think a lot of the people who call it "Giga" are ones who play Ark lol
  • @MistahJay7
I've always pronounced it with "Gig" at the front. Sounds more impactful as "Jiga" sounds weird lol plus in documenatrys i've watched on it they always say "gig" at the start.

I struggled to understand the name when I first saw it and thought it was (Gygantosaurus) but now I say Giganotosaurus
  • @migsyh2065
I always thought it's pronounced as "JIGA"
  • My favorite has been Giganotosaurus since before JW Dominion. It’s like the T. rex but isn’t a basic option and has a badass sounding name
