Christmas Song in Old Norse [Gaudete] | The Skaldic Bard

Published 2023-12-18
Here is one my favourite carols, Gaudete, which I translated into Old Norse from Latin and performed with my wife. The meaning of the text has been altered slightly from the Latin in parts to ensure the ABAB rhyming scheme was undisturbed, but I tried to keep it as close to the original as possible.

It’s actually my birthday today, so I’ll be taking a break from now until the New Year.

I’d just like to say, thanks a lot for a great year - I feel like we have a little community forming here, as I see a lot of the same names pop up in the comments. This channel is my hobby; I’m by no metric a professional musician, and I’m actually still recording everything on my phone. I never expected anyone to listen to the stuff I put out, so it’s been amazing to see the support I’ve received. Thanks for everything.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May God bless you all.

Lyrics:
Fagnið þér, fagnið þér!
Kristr er fǿddr
af frú Máríu meyju.
Fagnið þér!

Komin er miskunnartíð
þess fýstumsk vér lengi.
Gleðikvæði semjum blíð
ok drepum nú strengi.

Fagnið þér, fagnið þér!
Kristr er fǿddr
af frú Máríu meyju.
Fagnið þér!

Dróttinn er maðr orðinn,
Himinríkis jartein.
Endrsamdisk verǫldin:
Hvíta-Kristr er Gramr einn.

Fagnið þér, fagnið þér!
Kristr er fǿddr
af frú Máríu meyju.
Fagnið þér!

Esekíels byrgða hlið
er í gegnum gengit.
Þaðan komu ljós ok grið;
Hjálp hǫfum vér fengit.

Fagnið þér, fagnið þér!
Kristr er fǿddr
af frú Máríu meyju.
Fagnið þér!

Af því skal samnaðr hér
syngva vel í heiði.
Eingadróttin blessum vér,
svát Honum vel greiði.

Fagnið þér, fagnið þér!
Kristr er fǿddr
af frú Máríu meyju.
Fagnið þér!

  • Could you imagine tough, old former Vikings singing this song in Church? It must have been quite a sight to see the tears on their faces as they rejoiced at being Saved by God from the darkness of the Old Religion

When you are tired of hearing all the everlasting "Jingle bells" or "Feliz navidad", your song is a sip of fresh air. God bless you, Skaldic and have a wonderful Christmas!

You and your wife vocally compliment each other very, very well. It’s a perfect contrast

Merry Christmas, Skald! As a Maronite Catholic, I hope my folk will one day write songs in Aramaic just as you do for European nations' old tongues. God bless us all!
