Paris 2024 organisers have apologised to Catholics and Christian groups angered by a kitsch tableau in the Olympic Games opening ceremony that parodied Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper painting. The segment, which resembled the biblical scene of Jesus Christ and his apostles sharing a last meal before his crucifixion, featured drag queens and a singer made up as the Greek god of wine, Dionysus. This drew dismay from the Catholic church and the religious right in US.

The creative director of the opening ceremony, Thomas Jolly, said: 'I did not intend to be subversive or to mock or shock … In France we can believe or not believe, in France we have a lot of rights and I wanted to convey those values throughout the ceremony.'

It's olympics, not a pride parade. They all should resign from their post.

How is this an apology? The director had zero regrets
  • @Johnlanzer
That's not an apology, that's a "we succeeded and we will do it again"

Basically a girl/boyfriend that offended you and tells you “im sorry that you felt offended and saddened by what we did”. It’s called gaslighting. Shame on these organizers.

They’re not apologizing. They’re excusing themselves. They’re absolutely disgusting.
  • @dumwyteguy
"If anyone was offended, we are sorry" - That is a classic example of a non-apology.

In other words, anyone who objected is an intolerant peasant who just doesn’t get it. Got it.
  • Offensive, disgusting and hope to NEVER see the Olympics in Paris again!

When someone says, IF this offended you, then we apologise. That is not a genuine apology
  • @tammyjo6056
Basically, you demand tolerance, respect, and inclusion by being intolerant, disrespectful, and divisive. Got it.
  • @cocreator4120
There was no apology there from either party. There was only "sorry you were offended by our wokeness, WE were being 'inclusive', therefore you were not" disgusting hypocrisy 🤡🤡💩

didn't even apologize for the dude exposing his balls to millions of people and a child right next to him, wild.

It's no wonder that nobody else takes the french seriously anymore. They've been reduced to joke status.

Pathetic and embarrassing. "Apology" not accepted. France should never hold the olympics again.

They did not say they apologize for the Last Supper parody; on the contrary, they said they succeeded with the artwork. The only thing they regret is that not everyone is enthusiastic about it.

"I didn't mean to offend by burning a cross on your lawn, it was supposed to be art."

Shame on the organizers. Very pathetic taste. Why can't sports be just sports. Shame on you guys.
  • @Indigoporcelain
They basically said, ‘sorry you feel that way. It’s your fault you took offense’.
  • @pyzykparkowa8897
If they are so "inclusive", why did they spit in the face of only one religion?
  • @Azikkii
The Olympic presentation was literally called "La Cène Sur Un Scène Sur La Seine," which translates to "The Last Supper on a Stage on the Seine."
